R50/53 Yokohama Avid Envigor (non-run flat) review
Yokohama Avid Envigor (non-run flat) review
Hey guys, I'm looking at getting another set of tires, just went through a full set of these, and wanted to share my opinion.
Road noise/comfort: There is some noticeable noise at highway speeds in a quiet environment, but nothing that would be considered intruding during normal conditions. Example, windows down, or ac/heater, or just having the radio on at a decent volume, and its not really noticeable anything below 55, I haven't heard anything. They're hard tires, but no where near what the run flats are. Compared to those, these might as well be cushions of air.
Grip: Really great, I wouldn't say fantastic, but I've had to drive extremely hard to get these to squeal at all. They warm up quickly and stick. I never drive too hard in the wet, and never had any problems accelerating or braking in it. Not sure if its the car or the tire or me, but on big puddles at maybe I shouldn't be going this fast speed, hydroplaning happens a bit. I Was never really worried about braking distance, these with EBC reds and stock rotors and I was able to stop quite quickly and toss everything on the rear seats to the front. Winter grip, I live in Pittsburgh, the winters with these tires have been a bit stressful with a decent amount of snow. I have to take caution, if possible, I would recommend getting a spare set of tires/wheels and tires for winter if you live in similar conditions.
Tread wear: These tire did not have an easy life, and I do not take pity on them. Flying around turns, hard braking and accelerating, e-brakes, peeling out, j turns, drifting (okay, lift off oversteer), a little off roading, these tires have seen it all and lasted 3 years, and about 35k miles. I have felt no performance degradation until recently when I'm down to the tread bars. I could probably swap fronts and rears again and get another 5-10k out of the current rears.
Overall, would recommend this tire to anyone looking for a great 3 season tire at an affordable cost. Just be aware of the winter grip. Yokohama lists it as a 5/10 for winter grip on their site, and that feels about right.
Thinking of going round two on these tires, but thinking of getting some summer performance tires and winter tires as well. Anyone have tire recommendations for me?

My only complaint with the Avid Envigor (W) is the noise they make in a very tight turn. I hear a clicking noise which is the outside edge of the tire from the rain groove. I consider these tires for winter and spring driving. I never get more than 15K miles out of them...even rotating every 3K miles.
During the summer and on track I'm on Yoko AD08's which I find has very little noise when pushed to its limit. For my taste, its the difference between grip and no-grip. Be aware that the AD08's are being replaced with AD08/ R. They have improved the compound. I've also heard good things about the DZII, and the RS3 and may try them.
On the other hand, when my wife needed new tires on her Clubman S that had run-flats, I put a set of Avid Envigor (W) on her car and she doesn't care for the ride.
