garage door opener mirror is direct replacement

Just bought my mini last Saturday. Pretty loaded except no garage door opener. Was at the dealer today and we took a compass/garage door opener mirror out of a loaner and plugged it into my car and bingo it worked. Compass came on, and LED light for garage door opener lights up. I brought my garage door remote with me and it took the code from it okay. Ordered one from the dealer at $400, and the install I will do, 3 minutes at most. Thought I would let everyone know it is possible. I do have the auto dimming mirror though, not sure it would work without that feature.

good advice! I have the same issue...car off lot came with every available option but the garage door mirror. Never assumed it could be replaced, although need to investigate auto-dimming feature.

Velcro solved the problem for me. I mounted the gate opener and the garage opener both on the small overhead console.

An important point to keep in mind is that the receiver for the key fob is located inside the mirror. The garage door opener and compass may be plug and play, but if you do a mirror swap, you will not be able to lock and unlock your car until you have it recoded at the dealer.
