R50/53 Gawkers
I love it when people slow and stop to admire my Mini.
Love it when they approach and ask to look and want to know more about the Mini.
Many "qawkers" have been past owners of the old Mini and are pleases to see what BMW has done with the new Mini.
It is great to hear these old "war" storeis and talk with people who also enjoy Motoring.

I can't STAND the way people drive around my MINI... 1/4th seem to be offended when I zoom past them (they catch up to me after awhile to get ahead of me, and then suddenly, they are driving the same speed as me...), 1/4 seems to be trying to look into the back of my car... regardless of what they are diving, and how fast I'm going, but thank GOD for the remaning half which just don't seem to care (of course, i'm not saying that they are not driving like idiots, it just seems like my MINI isn't the cause of it...)

What I really don't like is the gawking from the rear, otherwise known as
curiosity tailgating, when some huge SUV inches up to about half a foot away
from the boot to see what the name plate says, or just to inspect the MINI
from the rear. It's just too dangerous, especially on a hill when you're waiting
for a light!

So many people talk about this fact, that I had to ponder it a little deeper. I wondered, are my anti-SUV friends and I just biased? So on my road trips, I started to keep a tally of the ratio of cars and trucks on the side of the road, either in an accident or receiving a ticket. In my unscientific experiment, the trucks and SUVs seemed to outnumber cars by about 3 to 1.
I think the problem is that so many SUVs have huge amounts of power, but no ability to change direction or stop. For example, my brother's Jeep Grand Cherokee accelerates to 60mph about as fast as an MCS! But you can imagine the consequences of that 4,000lb Jeep following an MCS into a tight curve or a panic stop.

We don't call them SUVs -- the proper name is SAVs -- meaning Suburban Attack Vehicles!
Motor On!

The MCS will also be joining our PT Cruiser. Do we regret the SUV or the PT. NO WAY.
The MCS is replacing a Miata and each vehicle has its purpose in our life.
The only sad part was the someone bourght the miata only weeks after we listed it and we still have months before the MCS shows up. Ah well, life's little problems.

Do you really have to get rid of the Miata? For love of the small cars, just keep it! Right now, I'm driving around my dad's red, '90 Miata (<45k miles). Miata's are great cars. . .How about tossing the PT instead?

I don't find anyone tailgating (maybe I'm going to fast????) me but I do find that SUVs pull right up to my bumper at traffic lights. Although maybe that's b/c we have no trunk so the big trucks look closer than they appear???
The other day I was stopped at a light next to a Hummer H2. I'd seen them before, but I had never been right next to one. I felt SO TINY! The license plate was almost the same level at the top of my MINI! Scariest part...the girl driving it looked like she was about 16.

Keep the Miata, keep the PT, keep the SUV. You just can't have too
many cars, right? Somehow, though, the Hummer (and the Aztec) remind
me of small garbage trucks. Don't go there.

I think this is because driver's in SUV's can see farther down the road, ie. over most other vehicles. Also, being that high up isolates the driver from a feeling of speed and gives a false sense of security, especially for new drivers. For these reasons they feel they can read traffic patterns down the road and stop if traffic is coming to a stop. The other reason is that *some* people purchasing SUV's have an inferiority comlex and little regard for courtesy.

>>Don't you hate it when you're sitting in your Mini waiting to make a turn and the car you are waiting to pass you *slows down* to look at your Mini? I miss more left turn opportunities that way!

You should try it in a Miata, L! You could actually see the driver? I'm lucky when I can see the door handle.

My name is Paul and I am a gawker!
Especially since I do not own one I try to get a good look whenever I can. If I catch the owners eye, I will give them the thumbs up. I usually get a return sign (NOT a table for one!) or a smile.
Have sympathy for us poor, deprived gawkers, we are without MINIs!

I don't know, I kind of think it is cool to have people gawk at my car. I get at least one comment or thumbs up, etc each day and we live in pick territory. A lot of the attention comes from SUV's. That's ok because maybe they will be converted to something fun to drive. Now if they would just put the phones away while they drive.
