What shape should my air filter be?

I'm getting ready to do the regular oil service maintenance on my '04 R50, manual transmission. Going to try ordering parts and oil online since I've got Amazon Prime which means free 2-day shipping.

Looking up air filters on Amazon and the manufacturers' websites to make sure I'm getting the right part numbers, I'm surprised to see that the filters for my car are not rectangular, like the ones I've had before, but have an angular side to them. I just popped open my air box, and I think I can see why. But I figured I'd still ask: really? That funny shape fits in my rectangular box? Have I been doing it wrong?

Just want to make sure I'm doing it right before I order. Any thoughts?

For what three of the Mann filters cost, I can have the K&N. Is it worth it? Do you have to re-oil it after you wash it or anything?

Thanks!

One tip....
Amazon in TERRIBLE for ordering mini parts...have the part number in hand first...the "will it fit" feature is useless on mini's....they get the CVT/s/JCW cars all grouoled together...the the 2006-2007 cabrio which is a gen1 is mixed up with the gen2 parts....brake parts are even worse...they don't have a clue what got the big brake kit...what got regular....

One tip....many cars have CAI filters setups... Cone filters....so look carefully before you order.
And k&n filters should not be over cleaned then reoiled....in most places they say to do it ONCE EVERY 60,000-100,000 miles......over oiling WILL cause the oil to get sucked into your intake, coat sensors, and cause running issues....

most washable filters dont need to be cleaned as often as you think, my street bike intake has only been washed two times in 4 years and the intake is right up frontwhere everything gets kicked up into

the intake on my mini is much cleaner and have yet to clean it in 12k miles

Here is the Pipercross version of the R50/R52 Cooper ( Non-S ) filters 2002-2008. Its comes down to the shape of the square and the triangular filter. Based on year and transmission tells you the filter. Or just match yours to the picture.

And the Pipercross cleaning kit.

[QUOTE=jwh;3955299]The air filter element in my 03 R50 is rectangular like this:

Yeah, that's what mine looks like, too. But when I take the element out, there are some protrusions into the air box underneath in what would be the top right corner in the picture, so I can see how the angled filters would fit that shape, and possibly just fit lower in the box?

The Mann filter website online catalog specifies the angled filter for a '04 with a manual transmission, and the rectangular one for the automatic transmission. This is in line with some comments I read on Amazon that say the same thing. However, when I've purchased filters over-the-counter at car parts stores, they always seem to hand me a rectangular element like the one in jwh's picture.

Are there two different kinds of transmissions (Getrag and ???) that shipped on the '04 justas? Does that make a difference?
