Ok so bit of an annoyance here and any help would be greatly appreciated! so bought a used 2010 mini cooper s with a jcw tune kit installed and the intake pipe keeps popping off the intake side of the turbo, so i have to now constantly check under the hood before i set off somewhere to make sure its still on. dealer tells me they wont touch it cause its an aftermarket intake tube (which its not) they say stock is the smooth harder plastic pipe with the accordion looking part towards the sensor, mine is currently the one thats the more rubber like tube that has the grid looking ribs on it. ive seen pictures of both in numerous minis. either way why the eff does it keep popping off!?! and any suggestions to keep it on better without getting a new pipe? i have heard around a few forums of it happening to others but with no real solutions or thoughts on the matter. so basically if theres anyone out there thats had the same problem please tell me your story!! haha. Thanks guys!

 

I've heard of this happening when there is a crack in the tube. The crack maybe hard to see, take it off completely and look real close.

 

I was thinking the same thing. In any event, if it keeps coming off there is something wrong with it. Replace it..

 

You have the 07-10 stock intake tube. Why does the dealer not know this? What year us your car?

Yep that is the stock intake tube. Same one is on my 2010.

Is the turbo inlet oily? Have you cleaned it with alcohol or as a last resort lightly sanded it (protecting the turbo intake) or used a little hairspray?

Also check your clamp. Is it worn or cracked?

I had the same problem which was due to the oil line leaking (which I fixed with a WMW oil line) in that region of the engine. I cleaned the excess oil from the inside edge of the intake tube with alcohol and sanded with 300 grit sand paper to give the metal a little bite and no more tube slippage.

 

I had the same problem but the pipe was tight and didn't seem to want to go all the way on. So grabbed the bastard and forced it all the way which caused it to split.

I've seen other people on here complain of this small split but if you look inside the pipe there's a plastic sleve inside so no leaks. To make sure I used some silicone sealant to seal the split and that pipe has not come off since.

 

Seen a couple of them split on the bottom on the turbo ( smaller hole ) connection side. They get a tiny crack and split on the outside over time, not on that inside sleeve. Then you tighten it down more and it cracks more and works it way off. Clean off any oil residue on the turbo connection and take it off and inspect the tube. Replace the bottom side clamp also if it been twisted or over tightened.

You don't want it sliding off and anything damaging / sucked into the turbo.

Check to make sure you have a rubber type gasket sleeve for the connection from the air tube to the turbo. The sleeve can be in the waffle cone tube or on the outside rim of the turbo. But it is a package deal. If you don't have that little sleeve, then chances are you have a loose connection because of the lack of material.

You really cannot crank down enough on the hose clamp to offset the missing gasket. Unfortunately, the gasket is not available on its own. You have to buy the air tube set complete.

 

3 possibilities come to mind:
1). Rubber pipe itself is falling apart (cracked, aging poorly, etc) - replace it with another OEM or aftermarket (e.g.: http://altaperformance.com/i-1400715...bo-engine.html)
2). The clamp is weak or broken - tighten the clamp, or buy a new one
3). Your air intake is not bolted down properly (do you have OEM box or something aftermarket?), and the additional movement and vibration from un-bolted intake is shaking the pipe loose.

On my '08 the pipe has accordion style section that, evidently, helps to dampen the vibrations. Perhaps there was some variation between model years. If your dealer is been stubborn and unhelpful (BTDT), then try raising the issue with another one !

you guys are awesome literally everything everyone said has been a great help, i did not see any cracks on the tube but it was a bit oily so i cleaned it all out even did a bit of the hairspray action the was suggested and we are golden pony boy! thanks bros!

 

Hairspray worked for me after cleaning off residual oil from the surfaces.
