Strange noise. Any ideas?

Okay, here we go...

The sound mostly happens when reversing or engaging first gear from a dead stop. The car can roll (neutral) and I can't replicate the noise. I have spun the wheels and can't replicate the noise.

On to the sound. It sounds like a metal contacting hollow metal and making kind of a tink or click sound. Usually twice, first more pronounced and the secondary a little softer.

I was leaning toward the clutch slave making the noise, but I am not sure.

I know this is a shot in the dark, but I am really just looking for opinions as to where to look.

TIA-

it is the flywheel/ clutch disk. look up videos of R53 make chewbaka noises. very common issue.

from what i have read and unsterstand is that the springs in the dual mass flywheels get cloged up with clutch dust and becasue it will compress so far and let go it will make the strange noise same thing happens in the springs of the clutch disk.

mine did the same untill i chhange the clutch and cleaned out the fly wheel from the vast amounts of compacted clutch dust packd in there. went throguh a few cans of break cleaner to clean up the fly wheel.

Guessing (like above) it is the flywheel....
Very typical.....can be ignored till you need a clutch.
It seems that clutches that do this have usually been heated up a bit...weakening the springs that allow the weight on it to shift....or it is stuck due o gunk...either way .only fix is a new clutch...most go to a solid one to save BIG $$$ over the dual mass, and you gain a very small amount of NVH.
I would also suggest you look at the engine mounts....when they get sloppy...or even "pop", the motor can thrash around a bit...bumping things...

50K on the car and it could possibly be the flywheel gone bad. Jeez. The Valeo kit sounds like a good deal.

Thanks for the heads up. I will look for those videos.

Oh, and the hydro and lower mount have already been changed.

i have an 03 r50 that makes a noise.
only makes it when rolling in reverse with the clutch pressed and in reverse. sounds nasty. if i let off the clutch there is no noise. it only happens when rolling in reverse with the clutch pressed. i first thought it was the dif but it does not do it in any other gear.
i might end up getting a trany rebuild kit and just go to town on it. but what if thats not the fix for the noise?
