R50/53 Alternate way to remove crank pulley
Alternate way to remove crank pulley
Hello
Longest story short, a bolt broke in the small hole for the crank puller, so looking for another way.
I am installing an alta crank, and aware of risks, so i dont care if i damage the original balancer.
I tried using a 3 jaw, but the teeth dont fit behind the balancer, and slip off the lip for the belt. Ive got a few thoughts and ideas, but what have any of you done to remove, providing the standard puller didnt work
Thanks in advance!

Same thing happened to me. After all the How Tos I read, I never saw a mention of having to insert a bolt in the middle of the pulley. Stupid - I should have noticed. I tried the torch method, the wedge/lever method and then gave up for a day.
I ended up drilling a new hole... and then another to line up with one of the originals and the initial hole I drilled out. Added a bit of JB Weld or something, then I pulled it and got lucky.
I was worried I was going to have to grind it off and end up like this:

good luck to you!

I don't recall. I just remember going to the auto store to pick it up.
Now that I'm thinking about it... it might have actually been one of the threaded taps. I remember trying to get everything to fit as snug as possible when I applied the bonding material because I figured I'd only get one shot.
Sorry I'm not more help. I just remember it sucking and making my kid go in the house so he didn't hear all the expletives coming out of my mouth.

Thanks again, so what im hearing is that you drilled/tapped the hole, filled with jb weld, inserted the bolt etc, and then pulled. I am going to try it.. This has proven to be the most difficult crank pulley ever... Ive pulled many off other cars with no problem
Well I got mine off this weekend. Luckily mine was separated in half enough that after some luck we got a 3 jaw on it and pulled it off with the help of a torch. It was a major hassle though, took about 4 hours

Thank you so much, im hoping to do the pulley still, but instead installed coilovers and camber plates this weekend. Im goin to try drilling the hole out, and using jb weld on the original puller bolts ( ican buy another) and puuulllll
