We can narrow the options down some if you tell us what class you want to run in and how serious you are. "Best" requires testing of all the options as what is best for you may well depend on your driving style.

I'm running 205/45-16 Hankook R-S3 (Version 2) on 16x7 42 ETA TRMotorsport in D Street. It's not best but it's good. $1148 mounted, balanced, and delivered from TireRack.

Do you want a tire you can drive on the street and also use for Auto-X or do you plan to have a separate set of tires mounted on wheels just for Auto-X?

I want the ultimate autocros tire& wheel that is also streetable
Assume at least 17" wheels are needed for a JCW coupe with big brakes
Thanks for the responses

Well im running 15x7 wheels with Toyo R888 tires. I have absolutely no complaint.

FYI you can clear big brakes with a +35 offset wheel and a spacer in the front (5mm i believe)

Assuming D Street:

215/40-17, 205/45-17, or 215/45-17 Dunlop Direzza ZII
215/45-17 BF Goodrich Rivals
215/45-17 Hankook R-S3 version 2

17x7 ET 42 custom wheels of lightest streetable weight

or search TireRack.Com for an off-the-shelf solution.

All 3 of hsautocrosser tire suggestions are great. I would lean towards the BFG Rivals for street and Auto-X.
I see that you live near Chicago. Are you planning to have different tires for winter? These tire suggestions are summer only tires and should not be used in very cold conditions.

"Ultimate" still doesn't provide enough information. There are a bunch of competitive tires out there that people run and do well on. Z2s, Rivals, RS3v2s come to mind. Have a co-driver? Get RS3v2s. Run in colder weather? Get R1Rs. Having to squeeze big tires on a small rim? Get Z2s. Want to hate your life? run Rivals. You've not provided enough information on the car or class you intend to run in.

But lets be honest. The ultimate autocross tire is going to be the Hoosier A6 (and now A7). They are DOT approved so you can run them on the street legally. Don't expect to get more than 50 runs out of them on a stock mini.
