Alternator Signal to DME (ECU) question

Hello all,

With my turbo conversion (eventually twincharge) build on the mini, I am currently in the process of putting on an R50 water pump and alternator.

To my surprise, the alternators are not the same. R50 uses a bosch or valeo unit, while the R53 uses a more compact denso unit (which is also cheaper I might add....)

anywho, the R50 alternator has a 2 wire plug, and the R53 has a three wire plug.

I looked into the wiring diagrams for the "generator" here

http://www.bmw-planet.com/diagrams/r.../r50/index.htm

and found the difference to be in that for the denso alternators, the alternator has an ALT_LO signal that goes to the DME.

My question is if this is just for idle compensating the load of the alternator? or is this an actual direct power supply for some of the engine electronics (to help get a better signal?)

I have a fairly decent background in electronics, but they are mostly limited to 120 and 240V AC and installing simple sensors in cars.

Currently have a vi-pec standalone, I will check its wiring diagram later to see if it makes any mention on its pinout of a alternator voltage signal.

But regardless any help would be much appreciated.

Or even better, if someone knows where I can either find a

"how to" on converting to an R50 alternator setup

OR!

an idler pulley that fits where the factory SC went and I will just get an electronic water pump

Thanks!

ALT_LO Engine Speed Signal
From the signals sorted alphabetically submenu.

There is a stock idler sold for non-ac cars....sold for ac delete kits....might be able to make a modified mount and use it for your sc delete....
The desnso alternator seems to be a much better unit...longer lasting, better engineered...internally it us the same windings as used on most Toyota/Honda products....
A few cars also go Mitsubishi units due to parts shortages....

I ended up puttin on an R50 water pump and then sourcing a shorter denso pulley used on some of the mini one's from the EU.

flipped the alternator upside down, made a shim for the top mount, and it seems to line up nicely.

We shall see if it does when I finally get around to cranking the car next

And I didnt have to convert to a 2 wire from the Denso 3! so that saved a hassle.

many of you will recognise this (it is a stock R53 alternator)

Well, when you try and put it where the stock cooper one goes because you took the supercharger off of the car, you begin to notice that the mounts on the engine are shifted to the left and upside down in pattern.

well crap.

Flip the alternator and now it "bolts on", but the top wont go down to the block!

So cut some shims for the bolt holes and now everything bolts up nicely,

Except crap!
those mounts being farther left stuck the pulley WAY past the other ones.

So I ended up stumbling upon some photos of mini ones that have our alternator, but had a much shorter pulley.

Long story short, ordered the pulley from Mini out of Germany,

And here is the difference!

belt runs just a tad closer to that housing now eh?

but at least it all seems to line up. Will not know for sure till I crank it for the first time.
