Rekindling the love for my '06 r53
I need advice reigniting my passion for my 06 r53.
It's still a great car after over 8 years. I still enjoy driving it and replacing with a new car doesn't seem like a wise investment right now. The problem is I just don't appreciate it as much any more and it's getting a bit neglected. If I budgeted say ~$1500 for improvements what would you recommend?
Here are some of the problem please suggest some fixes or other ideas to make my mini exciting again.
*The vinyl front seats are cracking a bit. I've reupholstered seats in a couple classic cars but the airbags scare me a bit.
*The interior plastic has gotten scratched up
*dog hair has worked into every crevice and carpet. (Short haired 45lb fox terrier mix)
*paint is chipped up & minor dings
*given up trying to keep white wheels clean
*performance a bit stale (but don't want to kill economy)
*rear wiper works but won't go to rest position
*rear hatch opener malfunctions in rain (just put some sealant around license frame and lights, should be fixed)
As a side note I'm sometimes also getting what feels like mildly warped rotor on hard breaking but new ebc pads and rotors had no impact and it doesn't always show on hard braking. (Could just be bad CT roads and stiff suspension)
Last I think I'm going to order m7 strut tower brace finally mainly for anti mushrooming

Well I believe to make a car more loveable, you got to put performance mods. Get a cold air intake (sound and hp and can help with MPG) -- ~$500. A rear sway bar will tighten things up, many say its the best bang for buck mod. Will improve handling significantly. Its on my list ~$300
Honestly a lot of your fixes are relatively easy. Dog hair? Get your butt out there :P bring a brush, vacuum, rake...whatever you need. -- FREE
Go to the dealer get a paint marker and cover up little rock dings or whatever paint chips you have. -- ~$50
Rear wiper...who even uses the rear wiper? If you don't...look into a wiper delete kit.
Maybe for aesthetics look into new wheels. Look aftermarket, in the forums market or craigslist. I suggest aftermarket because they are cheaper and significantly lighter. Lighter wheels can help performance a lot. I upgraded from 15inch holies to 17inch OZ wheels. $600 from craigslist EXCELLENT condition...retails for $1300 new. Only 16 pounds each.
Other than that you can use the money to spice things up. Plasti dip some pieces. buy some racing stripe if you don't have any, chrome your mirror caps. Get a tune up.
theres a lot to do and this website is here to help.

Looks like a nice mini. The body kit is nice.
Wheels look great there. Was thinking of get white wheels but opted for gun metal grey - hides the dirt well. Looks sick with red mini and white roof.
Let me know what you end up doing with the money.

Start looking for used parts so you get the most for the money you have to spend. I'm sure you are already doing that. Have you reset your ECU lately? You might be surprised how much it will liven up the car again. I just put the M7 Strut Tower bar w/ defenders on my R53 and really appreciated the difference it made. I put a Racing Dynamics carbon fiber rear strut bar on and it too was a very noticeable. I would do both again. I put a Alta "CAI" intake on. Not much power gain but the sound was worth the price to me. If your tires are worn down think about replacing those. I forgot what a difference fresh tires make. I was getting to the point where I did not enjoy driving the MINI nearly as much and it was because the ride became very harsh, noisy and had poor handling. For your white wheels try a product from Home Depot, if you have them, called Krud Kutters. I was AMAZED at what it cleaned up that other products would not touch, and it did all of the work. It cut baked on brake dust better than other products designed to do just that. Look for a really good deal in your area for an interior and exterior detail. I buy mine from Groupon.com
Just my .02 worth.

Lastly, maybe a good wax will put some shine to the beaut.

My thoughts....
I have seen many times folks take a car they "love" and they mod it to make it "better".... And in modding it, change it enough to not really love it as much...
Some mods, while adding a degree of performance, do make a car harder to live with as a daily driver....the coilovers that add extra handling for the twistier roads can make the drive to the movies jaring adding cabin rattles..... the super grippy tires that add more grip for the twistier roads can be loud,....the performance modds you make your car go faster can hit you in the wallet when you buy fuel or replace parts...it goes on and on....
I suggest you look at what your car is now, vs what it was when you boughtvit and fell in love the first time you dove it....and figure out where you have gone off track a bit.
Many folks modd cars to OEM+ spec, in an attempt to matain both relilibility, and the refined feel of a factory car...let's face it...some modds are more " quick and dirty" than well thought out and performing.....heck....at best they involve tradeoffs of comfort vs relibilty, matainabilty, performance, and cost....
So I suggest you look at your car....folks here tend to be of the idea "more power more better" than refinement and finesse....but enough changes can totally change a MINI....making one car driven off the dealer lot new, not resemble a car that has created....examples...a header can make great HP at higher rpms, but the drone can make highway travel loud of not paired carefully with a good exaust, or a strong clutch is great to handle HP, but Franky SUCKS in traffic, as does a lightweight flywheel....the list goes on...
So some self reflection.....
I found light weight rims helped bring back the light, fast steering I loved when new, koni FSD struts/shocks gave me a comfortable daily drive that can still keep up in the twistier roads....a custom tune to make the motor silky smooth and got me most of my mpg's back.....
Good luck!!

One more thought....
Look at swapping to r56 seats....they fit and are IMO built better...a few threads are around!!
And you might consider spending $400 or so on a professional detail....some guys can do wonders!!

What you have listed isn't anything really major other than maybe the paint. Thing is to just take them one at a time and fix it up.
Get some nice seat covers not generic but ones actually made for the car like the katzkin covers
Interior panels can be painted, vinyl wrapped or replaced. Used ones pop up here time to time.
Get the interior professionally detailed to get rid of the pet hair if you can't get it out yourself.
The paint can be expensive. Depends how bad it is. The front of mine is all chipped from stones. A good body shop can clean it up for you.
White wheels are definitely a challenge. Different wheels will transform the car.
Performance wise do you have anything done to it? If not look into a pulley, intake and exhaust. Again you can find good used stuff here and save a good amount. If your in CT I happen to have an exhaust for sale once I get it fixed up.
Rear wiper can be deleted. Problem solved for $5.
Rear hatch not working find a good independent shop to look at it. Might be a simple fix.
