OEM Daytime Running Light in base CM w/o fogs?

I have a base CM and I am very interested in the OEM LED DRL's. I have searched a lot of threads but can't seem to find a definite answer to a couple of my questions.

1. Because I don't have factory fogs and just have the parking lights, will this retrofit kit work? I saw in another thread that I need to buy a fog bracket as well as the retrofit kit, is there anything else? I don't have a fog toggle switch in the car so I assume I would have to buy a kit for that as well? I don't care so much about the fogs being functional, I am buying them mostly for the DRL.

2. Has anyone done this install on a CM without removing the bumper?

I did it without removing the bumper, or the headlights for that matter. All work was done through the fog light access panel. The one for changing the bulbs.

Thanks for the reply, this makes me feel a bit better about doing this DIY. I do have experience taking off bumpers but taking the bumper off a brand new car made me a little weary.

Did you car have fogs or just the parking lights?

Any more info on installing the new LED halo fogs in place of the older fogs without removing bumper?

That is the only thing holding me back.

You have to be small. No getting around that.

The hardest part, and I mean next to impossible type hard, was getting the top t20 screw out to remove the light fixture. You are going at it blind. You won't be able to see it. To add to the blindness, something is in the way. It might be the bumper beam. Your t20 driver needs to be small, or thin, so it can squeeze between the bumper beam and the light fixture. Putting it back in, is even harder.

Other than that, it took me a little bit to figure out how to move the windshield wiper water. It is sitting in its own notch. After I unbolted it, I needed to pry it upwards with a screw driver so I could move it out of the way. I didn't know to pry it, I was looking for another bolt for a good 30 minutes. I pried it because I was getting upset. It was the right move though.

If you can, jacking up the car and taking the wheel off one side at a time would be a huge time saver. You could pull back the wheel liner to get more access with the wheel off. It just wasn't a option for me.

Wow, thanks I didn't realize this could be done without removing the front bumper! It's also the one thing that was holding me back as well.

Having just replaced a fog light bulb and said every curse word in the book, I'd probably just remove the bumper cover. I can't imagine getting a t20 in there blind!

I don't understand why people are so hesistant on taking off the front bumper. It really isn't that hard and takes up less time than trying to get around it.

For me: living at a apt complex, with "major work" on automobiles in the lot is against the house rules, removing the front bumper wasn't a option.

I tried to replace the oem fogs with DRL fog lights last Friday without taking off the bumper. On the drivers side there was really no way possible to go thru the small opening in the windshield wiper reservoir sitting in front of the fog lights. Removing the headlights would not gain access either with the reservoir . I then tried to remove some of the bumper fasteners and was able to replace the driver side fog light. No issue with the passenger side. I then ended up having an issue with how would I affix the new wire/cable. I ended up taking off the bumper. I would have saved time AND my hands being banged up trying to fit in the little space. I would highly recommend taking the bumper off. Not difficult at all.

Windshield fluid in the way. Starting removing fasteners.

Fog light bracket is on the new light on the left.

Very interested did you get them in?

Does your MINI have connected and if so did you require re-flash?

Trying to get back to the original question, has anyone installed the LED DRL's in a Countryman that just had DRL's (not fogs) and if so what issues (if any) did you have?

My CM is the base model, not really any options at all. I did not buy the kit yet, I want to confirm if this is going to work and what extra parts I may need since I do not have fogs, just the parking lights.

This is my main question as well. I don't care so much about the fog portion being functional either, I just want the LED DRL's to work.

I'm shopping online at Sewell MINI for OEM parts because I'm looking to do the OEM DRL LED fog lights also. According to them, you have to have fog lights already in place to get the DRL's. If you only want the DRL's and don't care about having fog lights, I'm sure there's a way to wire that up. You could email Sewell and see what they say.

Copy and pasted from their site:

"Kit does not apply to MINI R50, R52, or R53. The vehicle must also already have fog lights fitted."

I pretty sure the DRL full function lights only work with the fog lights option. MINI states its for MINI with fog light option. Two wire from the factory down there for the fog / parking light combo. One wire plug for the position light only, I don't know if the DRLs can be tapped into the wire harness as I believe the plugs are not there for the fogs. I guess its possible to make some set up for the DRL tap in, but I don't know if that's possible.

Last time I looks at a CM / PM with the front position lights only I did not see another cable in the wire harness, like the toggle switch could be added.

Another solution is the Ziza Position Light LED kit. This is for MINIs with or without foglights and gives you an error free LED light when you turn the position light on with the parking light ( first click on the stock ) right before you turn on the headlights. So its great for owners with just the position light who did not get the fog light option and they match the Xenon headlights pretty well, or who just want front facing leds.

Thanks and hope that helps.

OK, I will reopen this thread. Anyone do a complete retrofit with a CM that DID NOT COME WITH FACTORY FOG. I would like to add them to my mom CM.

Anyone know how to get a DRL option with the CM anyway... thanks in advance

Hi BennyF! I have a base model CM without factory fog light and installed the OEM LED DRL.

First, you have to get a pair of brackets (63179813829) to mount the DRL on the bumper.

Then just follow the manual to do the cabling and installation. And you will find plugs A5 & A8 unoccupied as you don't have original fog lights harness.

Any 12V+ input to the DRL plugs A5 & A8 would trigger the fog light option of the DRL. So there are 2 ways to deal with that:
1) Install a switch with a wire connecting ACC 12V+ power source to A5 & A8 plugs that you can decide the fog light on or off OR
2) Connect both A4 & A5 with left side marker light, both A7 & A8 with right side marker light which the DRL fog light option will be triggered by the side marker lights.

I applied the simpler method 2 and working fine.

Nice , thanks for the update and glad the non fog / position light => factory DRL / Fog worked for you .

Did you just add a trigger switch or did you add the toggle switch in the blank bank ?

And pics of the mod ?

For my car, I just did the simple way -- connecting A4, A5 together with left side marker light and A7, A8 together with right side marker light. Therefore, both side marker lights and fog lights of DRL will be on when I turn on side marker light.

My friend did anthoer way for the fog light option -- He added a simple trigger switch on the trim. One side of the switch is connected the A5, A8 and another side is connected to an ACC 12V from the fusebox. I will take a photo of it when I meet him later.

Yes, as long as you get the correct wiring and inputs, they go off when you turn the car off with this setup.

The LED ring is triggered by cable A1 which the manual tells you to connect it to right footwell module A4011 inside the car. I read some threads of NAM and some owners just connect A1 to the cigeritte lighter which also works fine and more simple.

thanks great. I am not much for electrical. If I found somewhere under the hood that turned on when the car was running and off when the car was off. I think that would work. when you say connect the wires together, is there a plug or did you cut and solder and so forth.

thanks hey pics would be great for a person like me.

About the installation, you may check with this useful guide:
http://www.totalmini.com/forum/18-20...ing-guide.html

For the connection of the wires, I just use the clips shown in the attached photo and tidy up with electric tape. And of course, I cut the wire/plug I don't need. :P
