PO974 Shift Solenoid:A Control Circuit High

Recently bought an 07 mini cooper base for $3500 of course there's a number of things wrong with it.
(Recently changed the engine and transmission fluid, needed new headlights an antenna, and fixed a vacuum leak so I'm at $3800 now)
I have some minor body work to do and now the CEL, Yellow gear, abs, and airbag light are all on, hoping the car isn't a lemon and just needs some fixing after neglect (book value is 7200 once it's all fixed). Not looking to make money or anything just figured it's best to buy a car cheap and fix it now then buy an expensive one and fix it later. Hope my logic pays off...

Anyway a friend of mine who's a mechanic pulled up a code
PO974 Shift Solenoid:A Control Circuit High
The transmission kicks when I put it in D or R, I'm assuming this code will fix the kicking issue, the engine and gear light. Anyone have any experience with this code how to fix it? And or how much $ it's going to cost me?
