F56 VIN's

If I understand VINs correctly, the last 6 digits are supposed to be the serial number of the vehicle, while the preceding 11 characters define everything from MFG to how the car is configured. Given that - I'm confused that my new MCS has a serial 9xxxxx. I'd have thought that this early in the production cycle, there'd be some zeros in the first few positions. Can anyone explain if I've got this wrong or why the SN's are so high?

The first digit is the number of projected recalls for the first production group.

What gave you that idea? VIN's are not sequential production numbers. They are randomized and somewhat private. Knowing one VIN number shouldn't allow you to easily guess another valid VIN number.

I have to say my concept WAS that they were sequential. I know with my old motorcycles that was certainly the case. So if they're now random that would explain a bit here.

It's actually the last 7 characters, the first of which is an alpha character identifying the Assembly Plant.

I have the production number, and it's completed--can anyone give me the alpha character for my F56 hardtop? I assume this would be the Oxford plant.

I want to put it in the ship tracker. My production number is 0781610. Is this enough?

You can get your VIN in the Owners Lounge.

- Go to track your order...
- Put in the production number...
- Go to order details, and if it is in production the VIN will be shown. If there is no VIN yet then it is not in production yet.
