I agree it's kind of hard to tell from the pics, but the easiest thing to check for is the oil drain plug. It's underneath on the passenger side of the car and can be seen from the front of the car. Maybe whoever did the oil change last did not install a crush washer or did not torque the drain plug down to correct spec.

Even a pic of the underside of the car....preferably on jack stands can help a bit....
At the the very least....check you oil... Or your "#oil #sport" might result in an engine failure....

Just a suggestion, but I would recommend you use OEM filters. It's more expensive, but it comes with a new "O" ring and crush washer. I have heard of some places re-using the washer thinking that it's a standard washer. That's a possible source for your problem.

One easy thing to overlook is to make sure your filter housing is screwed onto the oil housing all the way, if the filter housing isn't screwed in all the way your engine could be in danger! We had a member that was losing oil fast all because the filter housing was starting to come loose, remember all the oil pressure is at the filter housing. The member that I mentioned earlier ended up toasting his/her engine and the valve cover was melted to a point to where it became a fluid pooring into the engine!

It could very well be the filter housing has warped do to it's design.

Forgot to mention the plastic filter housing uses a 27mm socket, but provided you get a good grip you can fix it short term, I think the torque spec is 28 lbs-ft but don't quote me on that. I you plan on performing your oil changes I'd recommend buy one of these, it won't round off the edges.

Sometimes on oil change when you pull the cap out you can spill a little down the front of the transmission housing and over to that area, check that if you recently did an oil change. Once you check the cap out and its on tight look for a oil leak right below the oil filter housing. Most likely the seal from the block to the housing.

Here is a link to the diagrams and locations or the parts with the parts.

Follow the Cooper S / JCW diagram.

Thanks

My last two oil changes I've had oil spill out of the bottom right when you remove the filter housing, there is no way to prevent that from happening unless you tuck a microfiber towel underneath to catch the oil.

Pretty much what I do. I have an oil change rag that serves soley for this purpose.

Based on being a 2007, it is likely that the gaskets between the oil filter housing and block are leaking. There is significant staining in the pictures, which tells me it has been leaking for a while.

I agree that he should check the oil filter (just replace it with new and a new o-ring), and clean as much of the block with brake cleaner. Then look for a fresh leak after a day or two.
