Windshield Washer Freezes

The windshield washer fluid on my Mini freezes at temps below 20-25. Not on the glass, but in the lines I guess. I activate the washers and nothing comes out. Wait for the temps to rise and it washes fine. I cannot vouch for exactly what is in the bottles since I bought the car last fall and they were filled with a blue liquid. I have been using official windshield washer fluid when it runs low. Does anyone else have this problem?

You just need fluid with a lower freezing temperature. Some will indicate on the bottle that they have a "freeze protection" up to -20 or -25 degrees. Some only go to 32 degrees, which is clearly not ideal for winter because liquid freezes at that temperature.

Makes sense, but I never had problems with this sort of stuff before until the tmps really went down, like near zero. I also didn't realize that windshield washer fluid had temp ratings. I'll have to pay more attention. Thanks.

You reminded me of years ago when I had a boat we used to use cheap vodka in the drinking water systems for winterizing. It was less expensive than the available anti-freezes at the time and in the spring when you started up the system, you didn't have to deal with funky tastes. Get a glass with some ice cubes and viola! First cocktail of the season!

Yeah, I've had trouble with the window washing fluid freezing too! I think the label on the fluid doesn't live up to the temperatures it claims. Maybe congress needs to hold a hearing on this and bring these lousy culprits to justice! I'm pretty laid back about most things, but messing with my Mini is way over the line!
