Anyone replaced AEM Intake filter with K&N Filter?

Just switched to my AEM Intake coming from my DDM Works Street intake. The Street intake comes with a K&N filter and my turbo spool sound was amazing. Everyone thought I had a blow off valve. Now that I switched to my AEM Intake it is dead quiet. Has anyone threw a K&N filter in it? I don't know if the problem is the closed airbox or the AEM Filter.

Most likely the closed airbox.

I know the DDM Works Race Intake uses a K&N filter. I am not sure if it is silent like the AEM one. Anyone got the DDM one?

The AEM filter is made by K&N, didn't you know that AEM is the same company as K&N?

Have you noticed any difference in power between the AEM and K&N?
AEM was bought out by K&N a few years ago.

Yeah the whole, AEM K&N thing happend almost 5 years ago, but the filter design still differs from each other. I'm sure over time the difference will fade. But back to the OP. Noise difference will most likely be due to the partial closed box. I went from a stock intake to the AEM. And I noticed right away it was much louder! Could it be louder? Sure.

But I'm more concern with exhaust noise instead of a hiss. I want my car to growel! Not hiss like a little kitten.

I feel like switching to the AEM from the DDM I gained some top end but lost low end power. Just through test driving. The AEM intake sounds restrictive and the DDM one sounds free flowing. I went ahead and ordered a new K&N cone to put on my AEM Intake. The AEM Cone doesn't seem that much free flowing. Even with the airbox out, I can't get the spool noise as loud as with the DDM with K&N filter. Gives me reason to believe the K&N filter has much more flow.

I see you have the JB+, so its safe to assume you have the N18 engine. I'd say once you're able to get a proper tune (custom) then the whole air filter flow question will be dead. Realistically there is little to no difference once someone has tuned your vehicle. So either way you go, you'll be fine. They're both great filters.

True. True.
I just miss the spooling noise of the turbo when I'm driving fast. Like a super loud BOV. But I'll let u guys know how the new filter turns out. Coming in the mail soon.

Yeah. Same filter used in the actual K&N intake for the Mini Cooper. And if it fits my AEM Intake, then I should have my turbo sound back and be a happy driver. Lol.

DDM race intake between shifts sounds like a blow off valve. Someone asked. There's your answer

I'm pretty sure they're all K&N air filters. Even when I bought a AEM cold air intake for a car in 1999 I got a K&N filter.

Take from someone who has been there and done that, my AEM CAI took my low end torque away! I drove for 5 months on my AEM CAI and then switched back to the stock CAI, let me tell you that when I switch back to stock CAI I couldn't believe how much low end torque I lost going to the AEM system!

If you're dead set on getting the AEM CAI do yourself a favor, seal off the induction scoop and seal the cutout on top of AEM airbox. You'll get your torque back this way! To this day I don't understand why this happens, loosing torque by removing restriction.

I sold my AEM CAI for $250 shipped on eBay and never regretting it since!

Yeah. You have me thinking.
I don't have that big kick anymore with the AEM.
I feel like I got top end. But low end seems a little sluggish now.
I'll let u guys know the feel with the K&N filter.

With the AEM it's full throttle or no throttle! There's not much inbetween, perhaps some midrange power, it just doesn't have the getup and go.

Again, with a tune, the low end torque loss is gone. You'll want a freer flowing intake. So, if you decide you are getting a tune, get the intake. If you don't plan on it, keep the stock one. You will get better low end torque with the stock intake if you stay stock(no tune).

Agreed, with a tune you'll get some serious hp as well. If no tune is in your future then I'd stay with the stock CAI. I could only imagine what torque gains I would be getting with a tune using the stock CAI!

Dammit.. I didn't know the AEM Intake for the N14 and N18 was completely different. I ordered a filter based on the specs of the filter on the AEM Intake for the N14 which is a 2.75 diameter. I didn't know on the N18 they upgraded to 3.5 inch diameter. I assumed it would be the same filter.... Does anyone need a K&N cone with 2.75 inch flange ??

I guess the replacement filter for the 07-10 AEM Intake is part 21-2027D-HK (2.75in)
And the 2011+ AEM Intake replacement filter is part 21-2037D-HK (3.5in)
Dammit. Ordered the wrong filter.....

I just found this out myself. I ordered an aem intake and I got the tracking information and it shows it was sent from K&N engineering. I was confused because I thought they were competitors. I looked it up and read about it and it is even more confusing, they are "partnering" on certain parts or something. Really weird situation from what I read.
