Winter Weather and Brake Destruction

Some of you may recall some of the winter weather that the South of the US was hit with in recent weeks. Having been experienced in such conditions, I chose to be a man and continue my life as normal. This was the primary contributor to the ruining of my brake pads. Filled with salt and slag, baked on from my driving, they ripped my brake pads to shreds in my 2004 JCW cooper. If any of you are familiar with the big brakes you know how annoying the calliper compression is, especially when the dowels don't line directly up. Couldn't find anyone with the BMW version, but got it done without stripping anything. Finally back to quiet functioning brakes.

How many miles did you put on those rear pads?
We have winters like that every year up here in NE, and both OEM and my current set of StopTech pads survive the winters unaffected.

...Just curious what your failure mode was...

I'm with afadeev on this one. Winter has never been a problem. We have had more than 3 feet of snow so far this winter. Just curious.

Winter destroying brakes?!
Maybe longer term....
I did replace a set of rear rotors due to excess corrosion....think they just never got hot enough like the fronts to dry out....but pads...lol...cars all over the northern tier of the us and much of the world would be in dire straits if rust destroyed pads in a few weeks....
If a car sits for months with rotors rusting....then yes..issues CAN happen...but a daily driver...naww...

Winters down here are...special. Had brakes checked just weeks before weather. Rotors and pads both received good marks. I think it was more a flook thing. I had only one pad that was ripped to bits.

I work overseas and leave the Coop in the garage for 30 days straight, every second month. That first day when I roll it into the driveway I can feel the rust on the rotors and it's like fingernails on a chalk board. Hopefully the build up is not too detrimental to the pads.

This probably sounds a bit out there, but has anyone ever sprayed a coat of WD40 on the rotors to prevent rust buildup? Just a thought. Anyone?

mine doesnt sit. Daily driver. But big calipers can make noise. I dont experience with sitting. But wd40 can cause brakes to work less effective or eat pads

Oil your rotors and pads...lol...
Most INSANE thing I have ever heard....
My car sat for 1 week every other week at the airport...then was garaged at home for the first 5 years...
Sure the rotors rusted....
But a tiny bit of driving...were basicly fine...
And oiling a rotor/pad....you do realize that even a couple drops of oil/grade from fingerprints can ruin a new brake job right...that is WHY brake cleaner is used....can't even verbilize how dangerous and a bad idea wd-40 is on brakes......
