R52 New owner - how do I know what should work?
New owner - how do I know what should work?
Just got my 2008 R52 this week. I have not had much time to sit and play with all the bells and whistles, but I am working through things as I get to them. My Cooper came with the Owners manual, but no stereo manual, and no listing of the features that should be active or not. So a couple questions...
The car has steering wheel controls, On board computer, rain sensing wipers, heated seats, auto headlights, park distance control, CBC and EBD, rear and front fog lights. Should I expect that the hands free telephone controls on the steering wheel will work, and if so, how do I activate?
I noticed the AUX input in the glove box. I plugged in my ipod, but there is no AUX button on the stereo. I push mode and switch between radio and CD, but there are no other options. Should I assume this was never active, or am I missing something?
I love everything it seems to have, just a little confused on what else it is supposed to have?

S or non s?
Congrats on your purchase!! Spring is comming....top down, bet it will be a blast!!
The steering wheel phone button...mini installed them on all cars starting with the 2005 model year...for a "future kit" that would have Bluetooth....
Very few of these kits were sold....like the typical bmw part, it was 5x the cost of aftermarket, and as fast as tech moves, was dated pretty fast...some folks DID install aftermarket kits using the buttons....blueparrot was common.....somebody might post the PDF for the oem so you can see if installed...the hands free mic was pretty poorly placed....so in general, folks did not like the unit.
The aux is usually installed INSTEAD OF the Bluetooth....it is plugged into the back of the radio, then installed in the location of your choice....the drawback is the CD changer/satalite radio is unplugged to plug it it...so maybe the prior owner unplugged the aux to plug in the CD or sirius/XM?
Pushing the button on the radio should cycle through the options that are active....
CD ( also reads mp3), radio. Aux, changer/siriruis on all but the early pre2003 head units (identifiable by the size of thevolume ****)...
Mini's had THOUSANDS of possible configurations, and many were custom ordered....
When looking for info...just remember you have a gen1 aka r52....then if you have a s, same motor/tranny as the r53, or non s, same motor and tranny as a r50 from 2005+ (manual tranny's maker changed in 2005).
So you kinda have to explore....

Thanks Zippy. Mine is a non-s automatic. Steptronic, not CVT. I will hunt around a little more on the AUX thing. No Sirius (at least not now, prior owner may have had it as you said), no cd changer. Love the HK sound, would like to not have CD's in the car. Need some nice weather to crawl around and stick my head under the dash, etc.
I bought a motorbike in Jaffrey NH a few years ago - nice part of of the Country you live in.

Pretty up north too....(wife's side of the family is from Quebec city and the trios-rivers area, and even NB...)
There is a yearly event...
Mini's on top...MOT...held up on/around Mount Washington every year...seems about 40% of folks are Canadian...pretty fun...had about 300 cars this past year.
Lots of info around....
Some of the older saved gen1 stories ( they also archive the install pdf's for oem part installs) over at motoring file.com might be good reads most of the stuff will be 2005 and earlier as the basic gen1 was frozen at that point...when the r50/53 was "refreshed, and the r52 was introduced....
Not so sure on the tranny...(99% sure the cvt was just programmed with fake gears...a regular auto did not physically FIT). But driven well, and change the fluid regularly, some still get a decent life.

Yeah, I think you have CVT because it was carried through for all gen 1 non-S mini's. Definitely change the fluid in it right away.
Press the "MODE" button to cycle through to AUX. Check your trunk - right side panel for presence of an Sirius unit. Not likely but it is possible.

Wasn't the R52 closed out in '07 and the Gen2 R57 introduced in '08? I don't believe the CVT was carried into the Gen2 lineup. If there's a real question, check the roll bars. Thr R52 bars stick way up and the R57 bars are recessed.
I think the Clubman was '08 and the Convertible '09, but I could be wrong.

So the last r52 is a 2008.....remember, go by model year, not production date.
Yep the R52 Convertible went all the way to 2008. The newer R56 Hardtop started in 2007 and the R55 Clubman in 2008. Followed by the newer R57 Convertible in 2009.
The R52 had some special editions at the the end of production like the very Cool MINI Convertible sidewalk edition ( one of my fav interior) and the Last of the supercharged editions "100 of them " for the R52 MINI Cooper S Convertible.
The Non S in Gen 1 did have the CVT for automatics , which is what you likely have.
On the Aux in in the glove box , they might have disconnected it, it should come up Aux on the screen when you select through the mode button. For the button on the steering wheel that was for either the Full Factory Bluetooth with the center armrest snap in. And the simple bluetooth with does not use the center armrest and snap in adapter.
Here is the MINI logbook slipcase and the 2008 MINI convertible owners manual.

You will have the updated version of the CD radio , but you should be able to select that au input on the mode. Bigger **** and such.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply's. I was away all weekend and still have not had much daytime (warm) time to dig around and see what's connected, etc. I was initially under the impression the Step-tronic transmission replaced the CVT. Seems like they just modified the CVT. It seems to work fine, and I will keep my fingers crossed it continues.
Scheduled the car in this Thursday to an independent local BMW mechanic (No dealerships fro 100km) for an oil change, battery load test and motor vehicle inspection (required by provincial law). Looking forward to their assessment of mechanical condition.
ECSTuning - Thanks for the manual links. I have the original book and slipcase, but the stereo manual was missing. Although the PDF of the owners manual will be very handy.
Cheers.

You don't have Sirius, there was never an R52 Sirius antenna.
For the bluetooth, if you press the buttons on the wheel and ACTIVE PHONE, NO PHONE, NO PHONEBOOK, BT PAIRING or any other phone-related messages appear then you have it. If nothing happens then you don't have it. You should also have a cradle in the armrest if you have BT.
For te Aux, first unplug any cigarette lighter chargers, then plug in your aux device and then press MODE until AUX appears.
BT, AUX, 6CD and SIRIUS can all be supported simultaneously if the wiring is done correctly. I have them all except the CDC in my R52.
