Fog Lights or Driving Lights

Are the stock lights in the bumper of an R56 Fog Lights or Driving Lights?

I feel silly asking such a simple question but across the forums, people use either of these terms for these lights, as well as the grille-mounted "Rally Lights." The real difference being, where are they aimed?

I just picked up my "new-to-me" 2009 R56 Mini Cooper. I've been having fun reading the forums as I awaited delivery - so glad it's finally home!

They're fog lights.

generally fog lights are low, their purpose to get light under the fog and a bit more side to side. Driving lights are higher up, even on the roof, to throw light as far ahead as possible; essentially an additional set of 'high beams'. Rally lights is a term that includes both as a rally car would often have both ... sometimes on one light bar.

Thanks for the confirmation. Having seen notes about front fog light switches and indicators on the dash, which I don't have, I needed a sanity check. I thought it curious that a car would have a rear fog light without front fogs but as they say, the only dumb question is the one not asked.

If you really need fog lights, you can get genuine fog lights and mount them above the bumper in the position usually used for driving lights. Alternatively, you can buy oem fog lights and mount them in the bumper where your parking lights are now. The oem fogs are usually available on eBay for a reasonable price. Installing them is not that hard as long as you don't try to put the switch down in the oem position. Just put the switch up on the knee bolster where the oem driving light switch goes.

So it would seem I'm looking at the parking lights, then. Forgive my ignorance; this is my first European car so I'm not accustomed to having a white light at the front end in addition to the headlamps. Parking lights have always been associated with the turning lights on my previous cars.

Here is the thread on the lower ( Position Light / Fog Light ) or you can have just the position light in the front bumper.

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ng-lights.html

Position / Fog

VS.

Position only light

-----------------------------------------------------

Like they said above the "additional driving lights" or "Rally light" mount to the grille and turn on with the high beams, if your MINI has them. Then there is a little button on the left hand side of the dash lower pad.

---------------------------------------------------

Rear Fog lights are separate from all the others. Looks like you have a R56 MINI Cooper (Non S ) . If you don't have the rear fog light toggle and the is a blank piece in the center lower bumper. You don't have rear fogs.

R56 / R57 MINI Cooper ( Non S ) -8/2010 Rear fog light. Non JCW Rear bumper.

Thanks and I hope that helps.

Thanks

Here is how the foglights look lit. They put out a lot of light close-in -- nice for night driving. (The car is very good in snow, by the way.)

That looks awful.

The snow, not your car!
