Depends on a) your amp, and b) whether or not you want someone hacking up your vehicle's wiring. The odds of a local shop understanding the wiring requirements aren't good (they are probably recommending/planning on tapping off the rear channels or rear speakers for the sub, which you can not do in most cases with the MINI).

It would be wise to spend a few extra dollars and get the newministuff harness, or ours, which is available through a reseller on Amazon:

Amazon.com: Integral Audio MINI Cooper Amplfier/Speaker Wiring Harness R55 R56 R57 R58 R59: Car Electronics Amazon.com: Integral Audio MINI Cooper Amplfier/Speaker Wiring Harness R55 R56 R57 R58 R59: Car Electronics

The labor savings at install (they won't be trying to figure out which wires to tap and won't have to spend time doing it) basically covers the cost of the harness. And you'll be guaranteed to have the right wires and no damage to the vehicle.

There is no turn-on signal passing through the X9331, so there is no access there. However, it is easily obtained from the X15 connector, which is mounted to the X9331. Tap pin 1 (solid black ~22ga) on the X15. There are other places, but that is the easiest.

NOTE: This is not the same as tapping a powered connection such as a 12V cigarette lighter outlet. If you want true factory operation, take the time to tap the proper signal - the 12V cig lighter and other options are not always on when the radio is powered up (so your amp would not be on), and the turn-on sequence using the 12V cig lighter often results in turn on thump.

It also adds circuitry to reduce the signal to a 4V max pre-out, as well as to load up the BTL output transistors in the headunit (without this they will go into overvoltage protection at high volumes).
