R61 Paceman S Cold Air Intake
Paceman S Cold Air Intake
Ive just purchased a new 2014 Paceman S and was trying to find information on a Cold Air intake for it. After doing a little research I've found that many people either haven't done this or have any videos / photos posted online. Looking for any input on which route to go, maybe even some video or photos from someone who already done this. I also have a r56 I've tuned and had tons of fun with. Used a KN Typhoon on that one.
The Defenders of Speed intake is the only true cold air intake (aside from the stock box). Sadly Clint, the guy that runs DoS, went on vacation in Oct and hasn't posted since.
There are lots of threads on intakes in the Countryman Drivetrain subforum.

True that is a Cold air intake - I guess I meant a Short Ram intake. Anyway I built a custom one over the weekend with really good results. Thanks though i looked into the DOS setup. Pretty cool. My custom one was under $100 though.
DOS just posted a new Countryman/Paceman cold air intake for $386. I also heard the ALTA one for $300 changes your exhaust and BOV tremendously.
) and its hard to get out a get good video/photos. It will be back up to 40 though this weekend so ill get some good video and photos then. Ill have the parts list and how to as well. The exhaust and BOV has definitely been increased.
The "hot" air intake that you installed.... It is no different than all the others who have glommed a filter onto the end of the stock pipe sucking in hot turbo heated air. No wonder you spent less than $100. You would be better off performance-wise with the OEM intake and a K&N filter.

Agreed it would be a Hot air intake IF, and this is a big IF, I didnt use the tube inlet from the car in the system and the lower air box-which I did.
. The ambient tempreture readings from the engine are reading colder then the stock system and the dyno results show this as well. As an employee of MINI i would say the best system for the car is the one it comes with, but if you want more sound from the engine there are many options you can use. This happens to be a budget system, unlike my other MINI R56 which was a money no option HP monster. I see from your signature you understand what I'm talking about and is no stranger to MINI mods.
I am sure this post will not be popular with some and others will think that twincoopers guy is a real kill joy, but "none of the so called cold air intake's or cold air intake's". They are high flow filters grabbing hot air from the engine compartment.
The stock airbox on the car deliveries cooler air to the engine, at speed the high pressure behind the grill creates pressure in the stock system like a ram air system, so with a high flow filter installed in the stock box at speed you actually produces more horse power than all the cold air intake systems pulling from the engine compartment or behind the fire well.
So it's more about window dressing and great sound track than performance.

How do you record a video with such low quality? Not trying to be a jerk but with the fancy intro and cool music...240? Oh yeah something about an intake...what brand is that filter?

I would agree with you on that. Never went for performance with this set-up ( again it was less then $100). The most you could ever hope for out of a intake system is around 5hp honestly (anyone else is lieing). The soundtrack on the other hand is well worth the money spent and once I finish the build with a bracket system and box it will look a hell of a lot better-Id say worth the money. If you spend around $400 for a system that's about $80 per 1hp. Not that smart of investment if your worried about performance. There's much better avenues for performance.
and here come the rants.....go on I'm waiting
Ha ha to answer your question Iphone app. ha ha. The filter though is a Spectre. I had used KN before and liked them but wanted to try this brand out.
Gotcha, so often when people do these DIY CAI setups they just buy a $15 filter form autozone or discount and I wonder how good they are at actually being filters and not delivering particulate to the engine.
Yeah, I made sure I wasn't cheaping out on that important part. The filter itself was around $60 (most of the cost) It was on sale at the time which saved some money, but I made sure it was going to do the job.
You know madness and a few other companies sell ram air system using the hood scoop. I like that concept because it's totally solid, but I could not bring myself to spend around a half grand when said and done to try it out on my r56.
I have used K&N filters personally for years with good results but picked up an Alta air box filter to give it a try with plans to remove the hot side turbo pipe resonator to add a little turbo sound track like I did on the r56.
P.S. Deckard your Paceman looks great in white...

I did this exact same thing as well, only used a different filter, and my IAT's are reading just 2 or 3 *F above ambient, so saying it's a "Hot Air Intake" is total hogwash.
I got these reading by using "Torque" on my phone.

the government don't want your car to make ANY sound, so its choked exhaust + baffled intakes we get. turbo cars respond well to less restriction in + out. exhaust can really hold back your turbo, first its cat-s resonator then muffler-s, i enjoy the mechanical sounds of my vehicles!

Yup
