R50/53 5E15 & 5E19 Codes - DSC/DME Issues
5E15 & 5E19 Codes - DSC/DME Issues
Ok guys, here is the full story. We have gotten some nasty winter weather here in Maryland the past week or so. Well, my wife was out driving "Nigel" (our '06 MCS) in the snow and as she puts it, his lights went crazy!
When she got home, I restarted him and went for drive and everything felt fine, but the SES light was still on and the DSC light would flicker on and off. I am fortunate to have access to a Snap-on Modis scanner and pulled these codes out;
5E19 - data error DME/DDE
5DC3 - right rear wheel speed sensor
5DB3 - left rear wheel speed sensor
5D93 - left front wheel speed sensor
5E15 - CAN communication error with EGS - fail
My first thought was this is just weird to have all of that fail at once and still have the car feel like it running normally. So I cleared all the codes and took him for another drive. The SES light returned and the 5E19 / 5E15 codes came back on.
I spent the next hour to 2 hours researching on NAM and other websites what might have happened and came down to either the steering sensor is bad, have a rubbed through wire at the TB, or water intrusion into the connector at the DSC unit.
I found both the DME (ECU) and the DSC control unit and pulled the connectors for both and cleaned them. (NOTE: when you take off the connectors, they have big plastic ends that hold the connector in place, you have to pull up on these to get the connector loose. Also, the connector comes out at an angle, not straight up and should be put back together in the same way it came out - one end first) Neither looked like they were that dirty, but I figured while I was there I should make sure. When I pulled the DSC connector, I heard a slight "crunching" sound like some road salt had gotten into the connection. I never actually saw it, but when I put everything back together I didn't hear that sound again.
This time I did NOT reset the codes, but instead starting Nigel up right away and all of the codes self cleared. Looking forward to running him home tonight and see what happens... WISH ME LUCK!
I will take some pictures to post later.
