Turbo failure, replacement thoughts?

So my turbo had an internal oil seal failure, and apparently it dumped about 4 quarts of oil in to my intercooler. BMW refuses to warranty the part, but that is a separate legal issue I'll fight out later.

I find myself in need of a new turbo, andham considering several options, from a rebuild to an Alta, as well as those sold by Out Motoring, but have not pulled the trigger yet.

I'm looking for suggestions, and any help from those who have done an upgrade.

Thanks all,

Allen

Maybe a Frankenturbo? I heard their turbo systems are quite good

Just a thought but if you are going to try and get this covered under warranty I would lose the sig and most likely edit your post. Mini USA is well aware of the forums , this one in particular. Between the meth kit and the tune they have plenty to work with in denying your claim .

The warranty issue is a legal one at the moment. I work as legal defense for a very large insurance company, I have that aspect well within hand.

At the moment, I simply need my car back. Neither my 68' 442, nor my 67' Wildcat want to see an upstate NY winter.

Not to go in to great detail, but the commonly cited Magnuson-Moss act of 1975 still offers significant protections, even for a modified vehicle.

Thanks for the heads up though.

Not uncommon for that seal to fail on the turbo. Even if not modded. My stock JCW also leaked at that impeller shaft seal and pushed oil to the IC and Cat/DP. High heat, coking etc.

You will need to have a backpressure test done on the CAT to see if it is oil clogged. Replace it if so. CAT has an extended warranty, like 80,000 miles or so, so it may be covered regardless.

I bought my turbo and DP from jmturbocoopers.com. Got rebuilt with warranty. Give Arric a call. He is very helpful.

The fJCW turbo produces plenty of power unless you find the car lacking. I'd just buy a new factory one from Way Motor Works and call it a day. It sounds like you have other "fun" cars and probably need something that is more reliable. Don't go down the rabbit hole of turbo upgrades on these cars.

Thanks for the help and suggestions folks, I decided on a 42mm upgraded turbo from Out Motoring, and am replacing the DP with an Akrapovic. I'm not taking a chance on a likely clogged DP, considering the car ate 4qts of oil in 120 miles... I have yet to see exactly how much is in the intercooler

I would have gone with a stock replacement, but considering that the warranty would be void as soon as it went on, that didn't seem the intelligent choice. Per out Motoring, the warranty on the new turbo is 2 years.

Whatever warranty I had will most certainly now be void, but as Mini/BMW consistently refuses to stand behind their product, I have no compunction about my choices.

Regards,

Allen
