R56 water pump + thermostat - tips
water pump + thermostat - tips
I just replaced these. I wanted to share what I learned in case it helps
somebody.
Just go ahead and take out both headlights and that cross bar all the
way. Makes it easier. Remove the motor mount. A jack with wood under
it seems ok, alone the edge of the oil pan.
The wheel on the pulley has to be removed while it is on the car.
The roller tensioner has to come off before getting the pulley out.
Obviously pulley has to go in first on the mounting.
If you don't have the right wrench for the tensioner a little bar
and vice grips work. A 12mm bolt is just the right size to keep it
in the service position.
Get new bolts for the thermostat. I broke one and had just enough
to get it out with vice grips. Be very careful. Go ahead and take the
valve cover "cover" off (exposes the spark plugs) loosen those wires
(excellent time to replace plugs), and get as many connectors as you
can off, around the thermostat. There IS enough room to work if you
man handle the wire harness around, but barely.
The clip on the pipe that is behind the engine. This gave me fits to get
back on. It's in a bad bad spot. The "trick" is to connect the pipe
with the thermostat not bolted on at all, and get that clip on first,
before doing anything else.
I was strained by this job. It was more difficult than doing the
clutch in my Honda, which requires the transmission to be removed.
