Is the little metal key waterproof?

I know the whole fob is not, but if i take out the little key that unlocks the door can I get it wet? Seems like ti should be OK, but who knows what microchip is in there!

Need to know if I should keep it in a dry bag for kayaking.

Thanks!

Mmmm the key fob is definitely water resistant I've heavily washed it before when I shined a uv light over it. As for the metal key I think it's resistant but I would imagine like any metal it can still oxidize and rust if left out. Also the micro chip is in the fob itself. As far as I know. You can't start the car without the metal key and just the fob. I think the key itself is just a regular tumbler lock

I was wondering the same thing, for it is nice to lock the car and put the key in my wetsuit rather then under the wheel well.

I'm not whether or not your have a air tight seal lock somewhere on your kayak but you should be fine to take it with you in the kayak. Assuming you don't flip over. Or you could just lock the fob in the car with the key lock. as long as you dry it you should be okay.

FYI, You can start the car with just the fob. When I go in for service, I don't take the key off my ring but rather just unclip the fob from the metal key and hand the fob to the service guy. I've also left the metal key at home and just driven with the fob.

My wife and I went kayaking a few months ago (it was my first time out). On the way back, we managed to flip the kayak. I had the key to my 2012 Countryman in a Ziploc bag and it was found downriver by another couple who happened to be passing by. Water got into the bag, but the key was fine (and I have Comfort Access) thank goodness. I definitely wouldn't take it underwater on purpose. If you can get a dry bag or box to put your stuff in, I would recommend that. My iPhone also went for a swim (also in a Ziploc bag), but it was toast. The new one is in a Life Proof case, and also goes in a dry bag.

I lock the fob in the car and take the key with me when I go dinghy sailing. Yes it is waterproof, I've tested it a time or two...

Thanks everyone!

I plan to lock the fob in the car, just wanted to see how careful to be with the other part!

For the R53 I just left the little plastic key in my life vest!

Thank you!

Dude.... the "little key" is metal... Wipe it off on something and use it.

You didn't say if you have Comfort Access or not. I'm not sure if it's possible to lock the fob part of the key in the car if you do have Comfort Access.
