R60 Engine light on just over 10000 miles
Engine light on just over 10000 miles
My CM 2012 S Manual got engine light on just over 10000 miles just now. I was accelerating at a traffic light and suddenly the car seems lost some power and then the engine light was on. I can drive but I clearly feel the power is not as as usual. The feeling is something like the turbo does not work anymore. From the user manual, the light means "Full engine power no longer available". I already schedule a service Monday but wonder if anybody else has the similar issue before? What is the issue?
This is the second big quality issue I have sine I purchased the car, the first issue is the burnt clutch just over 5000 miles. This time is the engine. Feel very frustrated about the quality. I have no confidence to drive it out.

I hope it is nothing major. I know this may sound trivial but is your gas cap tight? This will cause check engine light to come on. I called the dealer once because of a check engine light and it was loose.
Also, Mini recommends 91 octane (93 for JCW). I mistaken used 87 once and had a huge loss of power on a BMW.

I had this happen to me several times with my 2011 Countryman S ALL4, automatic, and resetting the gas cap typically solved the problem...even though it wasn't occurring near when I filled the tank. However, on a recent trip from Ohio to Maryland it happened four times. I knew something was wrong. Took it to MINI dealer in Maryland and turns out the High Pressure Fuel Pump was going. Replaced under warranty. No issue since then. I assume the initial warnings were an early indication that the pump was failing.
I had (traded in last month) a 2011 Countryman S. In the span of 8 months, the yellow engine light came on 3 times. Each time it was a different issue which required service (replacement of components).
I believe they were:
- high pressure fuel pump, inside the gas tank
- chain tensioner
- fuel tank vent valve
And I'm sure a myriad of other things can cause this. Sure, make sure the gas cap is on tight, but I'd be willing to bet it's something a little more serious than that.

I had a check engine light come on in my 2013 Roadster S after only 10000 miles and immediately after I just had the vehicle serviced. I was in Nevada/Arizona on a road trip and think I must have gotten crappy gas somewhere. I always get at least 91(93 when available like around here in ND). Checked the gas cap, and a few hundred miles alter put some fuel system cleaner in and check engine light gone 3 starts later! I had this happen in a Clubman S I previously had, and in my wife's Countryman S(after she put in 89). So these cars are pretty finicky when it comes to fuel. Fuel system cleaner always clears it up for me! I would try that first if a dealer isn't too close. I have an 8 hour drive each way to a dealer so I try to avoid going as much as possible... Good luck!
Just picked up the car from dealer after two-day service. They said nothing is wrong but upgraded the car software. I asked them about the HPFP issue, they said the HPFP maintenance will be automatically covered for 10 years. Released a little bit but still worry about the car will not run in someday soon.
