R61 Whole crossover coupe market in trouble
Whole crossover coupe market in trouble

I wonder how long Mini will keep the Paceman. These coupe crossovers must be cheap to make since they are just iterative of a 4-door, but the public just isn't biting, with any brand.
Here in SoCal, I've only seen one Paceman in the wild since April when I started paying attention. I see 3-4 Countrymans a day, and dozens of R5x models.

i dont listen to a single word jalopnik says....they have a hatred of the paceman period so anything they can do to bash it they will...and actually looking at the mini sales numbers...sales of the paceman are starting to pick up...i know quite a few people who are ditching their countryman and even hardtops for a paceman...
and for those who are relatively new to the MINI world i remember 2-3 yrs after MINIs launch it was still a rare site to see one...lets not forget the countryman didnt have stellar numbers right out of the gate...it took alot of marketing and advertising to get the word out

That is the genetic fallacy.
Jalopnik isn't a Paceman fan to be sure, but this isn't a Paceman article. It spent 99% of its time on other crossover coupes, all of which are in trouble in the market.
I wouldn't call 400 units a month picking up. Don't forget in July/August Mini/BMW started letting employees lease the Paceman for dirt cheap.
And you are wrong on the Countryman sales figures. Dec 2010 it sold 575 the first month, more than the Paceman has done in any month. By March 2011, it never dipped below 1,200 other than a 642 unit glitch in August 2011 which was likely production downtime. So, the Countryman got off to a rip-roaring start compared to the Paceman.
This isn't a slam on the Paceman. It is more to say the whole segment isn't that popular, and carmakers are dropping them. People seem to either want a 4-door crossover, or a 2 door sports/sporty car, not a combo of the two.

to me this seems like someone coming in saying...hey your car isnt popular but mine is...and again...jalopnik has an outright hatred of the paceman...you could tell from their review right off the bat they hated it and you can almost taste the venom in the article...
and if you want to be technical...the Paceman is the one that should have born the Countryman name as the paceman is more toward the original than the 4 door

Agree with Tata, I don't think of the Paceman as a crossover, more a modern more practical take on my 1987 16V GTi, it's just a bigger AWD hatch, in that category it's got few cars that are similar, a Golf R perhaps. THe coupe makes it sportier than the Subaru's ad the countryman. I get that it's not for everyone but I really love mine, it is exactly what I wanted, and from the first time I Saw the photos of it at the Detroit Auto Show, I said "That's the car I want to get".

They might as well stop making it for X-mas... I have one to drive for at least next 4 years.
The whole idea of this car is something I wanted as a kid. Now, it's here. I am enjoying it and not looking at sales figures. And for all haters out there: you don't know what you missing. And few of my friends from local MINi scene were shaking Their heads in disbelief that I gave up my "done up" Clubman S for this... But, I have no regrets! Especially after the last trip for work where I had to drive over some crop fields in order to get to where I was going (mud, dust, dirt holes and all...). I love this Paceman
