simply... yes.

Its a "powerful" fun car, but there are more powerful, more daily use practical, and handle equally well (or close enough to it), for equal or less money. I would truly take a pure bred Mini fanatic, or someone that has a ton of money that wants a mini for a toy that 35k doesn't make em blink (or for their wife for a cute car) to buy it over some of the other cars in the market.

There's nothing wrong with any of that btw, just how I look at it.

After saying it's too expensive, the writer says: "At least you get a fun, well-finished and stylish car that will hold its value better than the competition."

So, if the JCW Roadster is "fun" and "well-finished" and "stylish" and "holds it's value better than the competition", perhaps it's not overpriced.I only purchased the JCW exterior package for my Roadster S. But that doesn't mean I found it overpriced, just that the complete JCW package offered more options than I needed.

*My 1975 MG Midget cost $3,500 brand new. Those were the days...

At the risk of being torched, I do think that's a lot of money for the JCW. Especially considering that for that price you don't get Xenon's, H/K sound, heated seats, leather etc. That's inexcusable for a 35K car IMO.

I just built a JCW R55 and it came out to just shy of $46k. I am a big MINI fan but thats is a lot of coin.

They make reference to the JCW version, and yes, I think the JCW is expensive. The Cooper S is the sweet spot in the line, and in my case, the JCW would have been another $4800.

yes and no, compared to other cars it is perhaps expensive but in the USA NO car is overpriced :-)
We pay almost double over here (example: the barebone jcw roadster (manual, no extra's) costs a whopping $60,000 over here (Netherlands)....you people in the US have it easy!!
(same goes for houses...mhh maybe I should move :-)

their description doesnt make sense... the evo is over priced too? there is no other car for 38k that can beat an evo in a track.... that doesnt seem overpriced, minis holding value? jeeze, but the rest of their decisions yes

A moderately optioned Cooper S in Canada will run you north of $35K. A JCW Cabrio is pushing $50k. Up here, they're definitely overpriced.

$37k will still buy an STi up here, so if I were looking at NEW cars, a MINI may not make the cut.

+1 to you too.

We just replaced my wife's old car. We wanted something bigger than my 2006 MINI JCW. We test drove the Clubman S and Countryman S among other vehicles and both loved them.

We considered the price MINI was asking while using the logical sides of our brains and decided that giving MINI an extra $5,000 to $6,000 before taxes and not even getting amenities that other manufacturers were offering was lame .

We ended buying a VW Golf TDI. Very happy with it

And the JCW is staying with me for a long, long time

an evo 9 can (or an 8). it's a better car in every conceivable way, and was cheaper to buy off the lot. or an sti. even a wrx. the evo x is a dog pig pile of doo doo of a car and every tuner knows it. it has failed in the sport compact world. that's why the evo x is over priced.

i agree with most of that list. and yes, that includes the mini. there is no reason that some of these cars should be anywhere near what these companies are asking for them.

Stupid article by Jalopnik.......those cars may be overpriced but they sell a bunch of 'em. Its kinda like saying lobster is over priced. Yah it is, but people still buy a lot and enjoy them. Plus its relative......those cars are not over priced to people who can afford them. By the way, why aren't Mercedes & BMW's of some sort on that list?

^^^^ This. People are buying them, and they're paying that much for them for the relative exclusivity as much as the fun factor. Maybe there are better cars out there that cost less (better being extremely subjective), but there are also worse cars out there that cost more.

Like the old saying goes, it's worth exactly what someone is willing to pay for it.

Might be over-priced, we can all agree to that on almost anything in today's markets.
Bought the wife her dream car last year, a 2012 MCS...bottom line, she got what she wanted and I paid 39k
Not sure if it was the best deal on the planet, but she is VERY happy!

I loved driving her MCS so much, (when I was let), and I got hooked.
Took delivery August 3rd of a 2014 JCW Clubman.
I went a bit over, but after 4 weeks of driving it now, it was worth every penny to me...49k!

If we get to smile as much as we do when driving now, and see the heads turn as much, it was a great decision.

Now the only issue is who drives to the ice cream parlor and which car to take! (Both?)

I think the JCW models are pretty expensive though. If I made mine a JCW it would have been $5150 more which is more than I was willing to pay.

And you would be correct.
We got her MCS just in time to make the ice cream run with the Chicagoland MINI Motoring Club to Frankfort, Illinois.
Was fun to see all the other MINI's there.
I will tell her that hers is the official ice cream car.

Expensive, yes. Overpriced, I don't agree.

If you look at what other roadster, or convertible combined for that matter, you can buy for less than 35k you'll realize quickly that for one you don't have a ton of choices. And two that it is not that overpriced.
Most other roadster below 35k don't have nearly the quality of the MINIs or are just large cars (mustang, camaro). And most other convertible above 35k well are going to be more like 40k by the time you get the essentials.

It always gets to me when auto magazine writers throw these statements when they actually rarely put their theories to the test and get so blinded by practicalities, Yeah I mean you would think that for 35k you would get 5 seats on that roadster! . . .
It's also ironic that they mention the C70 and EOS soon below. Both cars a bit more expensive comparatively and leaving you with not much else to buy from: the big ones I mentioned before, the bug, and the Miata. It's not what you would call a large array of inexpensive convertibles is it?...

Do the shopping and you'll see what I'm talking about

mmmmmmmmmmyyeaahh... They are doing what any other car company does, asking a lot, but set the price to where people will still buy them. They know customers might think it's overpriced, but they know they will still have buyers and can get away with it. I think MINI is pushing it..

I too . . . but I also think doctors are pushing it, energy companies are pushing it, health insurances are pushing it, grocery stores are pushing it, when I see people spending over $100 per month on cable or cell phone bills I think it's pushing it, when I see some people buying 50k giant SUVs I think it's pushing it . . . Comparatively, I still think for a convertible with actual performance and respectable gas consumption it is not really pushing hard...

Inflation was 9%, Nixon had just resigned, the national average wage was $8,631. Things were so bad I quit working and went back to school in 1974. And I note that we are now both waiting for a pepper white Roadster S. It appears to me that nothing compares to now.

Equivalent to about $15,217 in 2013 -- not bad. But today you'd have to add to that the cost of all the required safety equipment and the technology that didn't exist in 1975.

I do think that, except for a base Justa, MINIs are a little overpriced; Yet despite that, I bought one because of the styling and fun-to-drive qualities. The fact that it's a BMW product made it seem worthwhile to pay a bit of a premium.
