3G iPod Nano not connecting

I just took delivery of a new 2013 MCS with Connect and Nav. I'm not an Apple guy at all, and I knew going in that getting the full feature set out of Connect would be an adventure. However, I do own a 3G iPod Nano, which has served me well over the years. It supplied all the music in my previous MCS (2010) without hassle.
Considering I will not be getting an iPhone, I at least thought I could use the Nano for music. However the device doesn't seem to connect to the car at all. I am positive I have the correct Y-cable (checked with the dealer) but when I plug in the Nano, it just keeps resetting - constantly. I don't think it's even charging.
I tested out another Y-cable from the dealer just to check, and it had the same results. I've done a hard reset on the Nano with no effect. I have not tried to restore it to factory settings, as this will require iTunes and would probably update the firmware to a version that will not allow me to manage the Nano as I currently do.
Anyone had a similar problem?
