R53 Left Front Popping Noise

I am getting a knocking/popping feeling from the left front of my car. It just started today, day 3 of my new job!

I can feel it with my feet and a little bit through the wheel. I got home, jacked the car up and checked the steering joint and made sure it was properly attached. I verified the subframe bolts are all tight and transmission mounts. The ball joints and tie rods are all securely fastened, which leads to the shocks......

I have no record or indication that the shocks have been replaced in 164k miles...but I find it rather odd that I would get this noise immediately and not slowly build up.

I know for a fact it was not there the day I put the subframe back in or since Monday, if it was related to the clutch job/subframe removal, it would have manifested immediatly after, correct?

anyone, ideas?

Does it happen when you accelerate/decelerate or over bumps?
If its when you accelerate/decelerate I say its control arm bushings? It happened on my 325i I had a few years back.

With the car on the groubd, take your wheel lug wrench and try to tighten the lugs on the front wheels. If the wheel appears to shift in the direction that your tightening then your control arm bushing is probably shot. My wheels moved about 1/2 inch when my bushings were blown out.
