Diy help! Hid headlight question!

Yesterday I noticed one of my factory HID bulbs had started turning pink. I knew it would stop working soon, but didn't expect it to be blown by the time I left work this afternoon.

My question to anyone here with any expirience is....

Is there a way to make an aftermarket HID bulb work on a stock ballast, and if not, is there a way to wire up an aftermarket HID kit to the stock wiring?

I really don't want to pay over $99 per bulb for the stock replacement, and I was just going to go with the aftermarket bulbs.

I have wired them up to stock halogen setups before and didn't know if there were certain things I need to do for the factory HIDS.

I have a 2003 MCS and if there was an option for auto-headlights I do not have that option, mine are manual.

Thanks for the help!

Aftermarket bulbs will still be the same bulb type (d2r I think) so they will fit without modification.

Thanks alot! Just found them for $4 bucks on ebay. Shipping will take forever but in the mean time I just took out my working HID and i will use my brights. I will wait my 10 days for $200! Everywhere I looked wanted $99 a piece! I didn't think they made those aftermarket or that cheap period! My mini friends saved me a ton of money once again!

You buying used bulbs from wrecked cars?
Or perhaps from a small time criminal? (at 4$ a really small time criminal...then again...they do have you credit/debit card, name, billing address....).
Good luck....I hope you found the deal of the century....but...

I was directed to TheRetrofitSource.com by a member here for a great deal on real Phillips HID bulbs. The service was beyond excellent, shipping was fast and the price was great for the product received. Nowhere near the cheapo DDM bulbs in price but you also don't have to worry about them possibly going out and getting them covered under warranty.

Just food for thought.

How long did the HIDs last before dying? Years and miles please. Were they on as DRL?

I have an 06 R53...bought it a little over a year ago with 43k on the clock now I'm at 53k I'd assume my lights were original..and I only ran them at night or in the heaviest of rain. Dawn/dusk/light rain was just parking lights/fogs

Sorry I missed this earlier, yes, since the bulb is a seperate entity in the system you can get them from anyone who sells them. One thing that a lot of people don't realize is that most hid bulbs are exactly the same size, (of course there are a few exceptions) the only real differences are in the base that the actual glass portion is attached to (this is where the "size" comes in, different bases & plug in for different mfg'rs & uses) and different ballast outputs (35w / 55w) but the bulbs themselves are the same.

DRL on gen1 uses the halogen high-beam on a slightly lower wattage/voltage....so no effect.
HID bulbs tend to turn a bit pinkish in the last few hours before failure....
Cheap eBay bulbs tend to be off color (like the GREEN $4.00 ONES POSTED) that fail quality control....giving them an odd color, and usually a short life....
