overkill? installing new pulleys

Hey guys

its almost there... i finally register my r53 this coming wednesday after almost a year of putting it back together haha

anyways ive been collecting parts

and i know the first thing i want to do is get pulleys on this bad boy.

i started doing a package to go with my pulleys, got the pulleys, belt, tensioner stop, Ways delrin tensioner bushings.....

i was thinking of going ahead and just getting a whole new tensioner assembly and idler pulley to just get them out of the way since im in there.
is that overkill? or wasting $$$

while Im at it i have super pro engine bushings too LOL

There is nothing wrong with preventative maintenance.

and another quick question.... hooking up the ultragauge to the obd2

I havent had a chance to really step on the mini but for the quick run up the block i was only seeing 8psi?

ive been reading stock should be around 10.5 - 11.5 psi

is there something wrong here... i live in california and we are right at sea level

car has been sitting for a year only 57k miles on it... just wondering if 8psi is ok for bone stock with just an exhaust...

Any head work on the motor? Anything that allows the motor to "breath better", even a exhaust will result in lower than "regular" boost...but will actually result in more power...
Do look at the rubber ic boots...they do harden with age and can leak...

No headwork to my knowledge I added the exhaust

I'm going to have to do a real run and see if I see more than 8 ( bit paranoid driving it around the bloxk since its not registered with that state yet)

Yeah, you need to get the rpm high for a real check.. SC are belt driven and it sounds like you're use to Turbo ... They max out on psi much sooner. You should search for Silicon valley MiNis on FB.

I just installed the Scangauge also I was able to hit 9.7 psi with the pedal to the floor and around redline in 3rd gear. I was very suprised how much throttle position makes a difference to get the boost up. I can rev it without to much throttle and not get that much boost but give it some pedal and the boost shoots right up. I have only had the car for about 4 months and I believe its completly stock for now!

is that considered low? since stock should be 10.5-11.5

I'm not sure it could be the scangauge speed or I did not see the peak boost its hard to be staring at the scangauge while driving on the freeway at full tilt. Ill have to do a few more test runs and see if I can get a more accurate reading.

I have the pulley to put on but wanted to get the scangauge to see the before and after the mods. Like I said just put the scangauge on 2 days ago and have it velcro under the switches so its kind of low. I may try it on the dash to see if it is easier to see while driving. It would be cool if scangauge made it so it would make it so it would do a heads up to the windshield *idea scangauge*

Just a hunch....
Take a look at where the intake tube from the aftermarket intake (if they are using the Alta silicone intake hose) and make sure it is on tight....it usually requires trimming...folks sometimes slap it on...and it slips off...results in hot, dirty air going into the intake.
After you get the pulleys on, you will find you get into boost at lower rpms...and make a bit more...but rapidly make more heat, and depending on fuel quality (east coast 93 is fine..ca 90/91 can get you timing pull) get into diminishing returns...most trackies that redline go to a 15% reduction...street drivers find 17% is better...simply less redline pulls....less heat...lots less..going beyong a 17% has proven troublesome from a reliability standpoint...sometimes fuelcutoffs, etc..but for the right driver, can work......another thought......but you can check your bpv..bypass valve... Zip tie it closed...check with a pull for same boost...the springs age...and they can leak.

Just ran another run got the boost up to 10.2 on the scangauge. It was about 68 degrees this morning when I ran it. I'm not sure how fast the SG refreshes I have it on the fast refresh rate. I'll run a few more tests before I install the Pulley to get a better base line on the stock boost.

Wasnt watching the tach was looking at the boost..but it was probably around 7k it didn't hit the limiter. Im going to try to put the SG on the dash so I can see everything.

Just a hunch....
Most folks quoting boost on threads use an analog gauge... The digital obb2 reader numbers are only as good as the cars info....an oily sensor...so before I chase a ghost, I would drive it...and see if you are happy with the performance....

I realize the SG is probably not as accurate as a stand alone gauge. But its what I have right now. Im just going to use it as a baseline for the power upgrades later. I also like that I can move it between vehicles I just got another cable to install in my Dodge truck. Curious to see how much boost it puts out

just a quick update, got the car registered woohoooo (boo i had about 3-4 years of back penalties for the car $$$$, could of bought a sprintex!!!)

anyways man this car is an awesome daily driver! haha

i got my alta intake in and the gearbox insert in.... pretty fun, but needs more boost! haha

just have to order the tensioner assembly, idler pulley, some colder plugs and I think I should be golden for the install.

quick question... the IDLER PULLEY... should be straight forward? is it held on by one bolt? and pops right out?

and Im trying to think of how I am going to go about the install pulleys....
I have the alta v2 15%, alta crank pulley, alta tensioner stop, and Ways delrin bushings, also picked up some gatorback belts for stupid cheap...(if anyone is looking for them ebay has them at around $5 a belt, so i got 3)

I plan on getting the new tensioner assembly and putting the bushings in and stop before hand (duhhh). But in what order should I go about all of them?

should i lift the motor up then do the supercharger pulley first? do the crank pulley first or second last?? etc etc etc

thanks guys

i might get some pictures up once i get the stripes off and do a detail haha
