Faulty Tachometer Display? Need Advice

Bought my R53 about a year ago, 02 with only 29,000 miles on it, not a single scratch on the car, The only thing wrong with it when I bought it was the screen under the tachometer was broken (the one where it shows the outside temp, avg mpg etc) I'd really like to get it fixed, But when I got it checked out by the dealership when I first bought it they said the only way to fix it was to replace the entire tachometer which would run me about $700

Every so often(once every few months)the screen glitches out and looks like its starting try to display something but its just garbled and glitched out(90% of the time its just broken and blank), I've checked all the fuses and their fine, the dealership said something within the screens circuitry is broken and because its all one unit they'd have to replace the whole thing

I recently got my tax return back and I debating taking the plunge and just going for it and getting it done, But first wanted to see if you guys had any ideas for alternatives or just any possible solutions. \

Thanks for taking the time to read this, Any help is much appreciated!

Mine is doing the same thing all of a sudden. I was able to capture it on video as well for reference. Mine is blank most of the time and the PO added autometer gauges, which don't work, on both sides of the tach. My display button above the speedometer has also never had any effect on this display.

I am updating this older thread because I also want to narrow down the cause and find a resolution. There are other threads on this but they all seem to transition into the speedometer display and how to retrofit that. There was also mention of the indicator stalk/switch causing this but nothing concrete as far as a resolution. I initially suspected a connection internal to the tach before reading about the indicator.

Has anyone had this issue and repaired it? If so, what did you end up doing?

Yes, but that is related to the oxygen sensor. It was on before this started happening. I just need to order the NTK sensor.

How do you know the error means that the O2 sensor is bad? Of course, it may be bad, but many many emissions related problems result in an O2 sensor going out of range. If combustion is too rich or lean, you will get an O2 error. The mechanic changes it, resets the light and tells you it’s fixed. Then you drive the car and after the restarts, the error comes back, because it was never the O2 sensor at all.

If you have a basic scan tool, plug it in and have it read engine RPM’s. Does it show the RPM’s correctly going up and down? You should also look for any vacuum leaks or holes in intake hoses.

Replacement sensor was based on the common issue people were seeing with oxygen sensors on these with the code I have. NTK sensor specifically seems to resolve this. Engine is good, runs great. Just finished rebuilding everything not long ago.

I do still want to determine why my display is glitching out though.

More than likely it's the tach itself, they are plug and play with no programming needed.
$49 bucks on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/28489445271...oAAOSwdFNizgZP

That is where I was leaning and I am glad to hear that no programming is needed for this.

More than likely it's the tach itself,
Can confirm. Mine went bad, would intermittently die, come back to life, then die again. Idiot lights would come on / go out / stay on with key removed. Oh and it turned out to be the source of my battery drain. $40 on ebay later, no more issues, instantly fixed. They come in chrome trim or brushed aluminum depending on your interior trim package.
