Time to Step up, BMW/Mini! IOS In the Car
I'm really surprised to not see Mini/BMW on the list considering they have snubbed all other platforms from using their Connected platform. I'm hoping that doesn't mean it can't be supported with a software update...

I'm assuming it'll need more than a software update can provide.
I'd be happy to be proven wrong, though. Makes me wish I didn't just pay $750 for the Mini Connected package, though.
Hopefully things still work as they do now in iOS 7.

They would have to probably rework a lot of the software in the dash, though, and I have a feeling they won't bother since they are probably coming out with new HUs for 2014... sigh.
Well, we've got the USB jack and the analogue/aux 3.5mm jack. It's likely that you just use a lightning cable from the 5 to the USB and it interfaces via that connection.

Yeah, I don't think it's a hardware issue aside from the lack of a siri button in the car (since BMW has its own sucky voice recognition system)... There are specific APIs required.
iOS in the car is just Airplay for your Car.
It should actually be quite easy for MINI to suppor iOs in the car. Mini Connected already support Airplay which can send video. iOS in the Car will eseentially broadcast a different interface to cars that support the technology. Your iPhone will be doing all the work. There are numerouse hacks to get Mini Connected to Show AirPaly while in motion. Supporting iOs in the Car would simpley be a matter of flipping that flag and accepting the necessary inputs from the multidirectional joystick.
If they want to do it should be quite easy.

Easy is a relative term, and there's more to it than just airplay. As you mentioned, the joystick controls are not presently directly manipulating things on the phone when you're using Connected Apps. The most you're doing now is advancing to the next track, and choosing songs.
Yes it should be possible for them to retrofit existing stuff, but I doubt they will. Going forward they may end up rolling it into future cars but I don't think they'll be rolling it out to people who already have Connected.
With luck, the future cars' software updates can be hacked onto our old stuff though...One can hope.
