Exhaust manifold gasket question

Looking at the new OEM exhaust manifold gasket, one side of the gasket is flat and on the other side is raised around each exhaust port.....Does anybody know if the flat side or the raised side goes towards the head??? or does it even matter ???.............Thanks

Okay,.. I looked it up. I was expecting some lettering like this side facing head... Nah

My book says this ".....installation is reversal of removal, noting the following points:

Apply some anti seize compound to the manifold bolts

Always replace the manifold gaskets with the raised edges of the gasket facing toward the manifold

Exhaust manifold fasteners: 18 foot pounds

Note: I was surprised my book did not mention a particular order to tighten the bolts in. Me, I would tighten them in some sort of X Patern
just to be safe

If you didn't use anti-seize then if it were me, I'd get a new gasket and redo it very soon. You wouldn't want a headache later if it starts to leak, and then the bolts are stuck too.

Thanks for finding/posting this. All my Bentley manual basically says is installation is reverse. I did not notice how my old gasket was oriented. Also I could not tell by looking at the old one or the many pictures I took during dis-assembly.

It doesn't say anywhere, but I put it up side toward the head. So you'll be fine.

The tightening torque's listed in the Bentley Manual list the exhaust manifold to cylinder head 18ftlb, exhaust system to exhaust manifold 44ftlb, and then heat shield to cylinder head 10ftlb. I'd assume to maybe go in that order? Not sure if mine is the older version, but for the gasket it just says, "replace exhaust manifold gasket" and doesn't say in any particular way. So thanks for posting that!

Good thread here , CooperSAZ noticed that the flared outside goes towards the rear of the vehicle.

" The old gasket will most likely drop away as well. Pick up and remove the gasket. Note the way it is placed on the engine. Make sure the flared out side is facing the rear of the vehicle. "

Sorry, I'm confused... I've read from the top, and it appears to me that there is conflicting info here (or perhaps I don't understand the terminology) Way, ECS, et all... Can you once again confirm which way the raised side goes towards?

Is the "manifold side" the engine side (front of car) or the pipe side (rear of car)?

Based on what CooperSAZ noticed the "old gasket was flared side to the rear of the vehicle" , manifold side rear on the car.
