R56 Yep... ANOTHER Hella 500 Install
Yep... ANOTHER Hella 500 Install
NAM,
I am not very electrical savvy, but I am determined to install the driving lights by myself. I want the driving lights to turn on without having to turn on the high beams. All I have is the Hella 500 kit, but I don't know where to start. I have read every forum out there and they all say to tap into this wire and tap into that fuse, but if someone can "dumb" it down it would be greatly appreciated!

If you wire your driving lights so they will be on without the high beams you will have to manually turn off the driving lights every time you meet oncoming traffic. If you really want to do it that way all you have to do is take the high beam circuit out of the equation. You can do this by wiring position 2 on the Hella switch directly to one of the parking lights. This way power from the parking lights will be used to trigger the relay that actually turns on the driving lights. If you do this the driving lights will come on any time you put the switch in the ON position and the headlights are on (regardless of whether you are using the high or low beams).
I assume you want to be able to turn on the driving lights anytime the headlights are on (low or high beams). If that's the case you can accomplish that by following the Hella wiring diagram and attaching the green wire to position 1 on the switch and also connecting it to BOTH the high and low beam wires at the headlight. The easiest place to access 12v will be at the under hood fuse box. The large connector (attached by a 10mm bolt) at the right rear of the fuse box is a constant 12v. Several good grounding points are under that same fuse box. I see that Braminator advises you to connect to position 2 on the Hella switch; my old Hella directions show the high beam trigger voltage going to position 1. Just follow the Hella directions and you'll be fine. Good luck.

I don't mean to ask so many questions, but what does the "large connector" for 12v actually look like? Also, fuse F48 in the passenger fuse box shows a symbol for the headlamps I believe, so can I use a blade fuse tap there?
Remove the cover of the under hood fuse box. At the right rear of the fuse box you will see a 10mm bolt head that screws vertically into the fuse box. That bolt is securing a large gauge wire (from the battery) that is providing constant 12v power to all the circuits in the fuse box. Loosen that bolt and loop your 12v wire for the Hellas under it and retighten. You could certainly get your power from inside the cabin but that's just one more wire that you're going to have to go thru the firewall with.
The atch pic shows the under hood fuse box. The bolt I'm referring to is marked by a red dot. You can also see the red wire I attached that provides power to my driving lights and the inline fuse provided by Hella to protect the circuit.
