Ceramic Brake Pads

2005 Mini Cooper S Hatchback. Time to do the brakes. Your help is requested to decide between various low dust ceramic pads.

EBC Red
Akebono Euro Ceramic
Hawk Performance Ceramic

Main goal is low dust with braking performance equal to or better than stock pads.

Please let me know your reviews of the above pads - personal experience is of the most benefit.

Thank you!

General ino...
Hawks tend to eat rotors when cool...
Akebonno is a near dustless oem eqivelent....will not stand up to track heat...
The CURRENT ebc red formulation seems to be what you sre looking for...the version from a couple of years ago was iffy, but the current one is well liked...

+1 on EBC red stuff!

Equal to or better than OEM? That takes in everything else.

I didn't take the time to read the whole dang thing, but here is a thread that appeared just 4 down from yours. There might be a few words of wisdom that may be helpful.

EBC Redstuff Brake pads for 2002-2006 R50,R52,R53 MINI Cooper and Cooper S. The Redstuff superstreet formula is for cars above 200bhp and fast street driving. FAST STREET PADS and daily driver MINI's.

These are a Kevlar fibre based brake compound enhanced with ceramic particles. If you have previously tried EBC redstuff (pre-ceramic compound) this material is light years ahead. It lasts longer, it brakes better and is quieter. Being a hard wearing pad, bed-in times can be as long as 1000 miles and drivers must be patient until the pad takes up the shape of their disc (brake rotor).

This is a great pad for a daily driver MINI, and fast road pad for repeated heavy braking. We here at WMW actually use these on our own MINI that we drive on the street. These emit far less dust than semi-metallic pads and has been proven to stop a passenger car/sedan/sport compact/hot hatch quicker than OEM pads from 100mph/160kph. These features EBC Brake-In surface coating which conditions rotor surface and accelerates pad bed-in. Nominal friction coefficient 0.5 with approx. 50% dust reduction compared to other pads.
These pads also have the slots in them for the OEM brake pad sensors to be used.
or you did not list, but might like http://www.ctbrakes.com/brake-compounds.asp
Carbotech™ 1521™

The Carbotech™ 1521™ is our high performance street compound. The 1521™ compound is known for its release and modulation, along with unmatched rotor friendliness. 1521™ is also a very low dusting and low noise compound with an excellent initial bite. This compound's excellent linear torque production provides incredible braking force without ABS intervention. Carbotech™ 1521™ operating range starts out at ambient and goes up to 800°F (426°C+). 1521™ is suitable for ALL street cars, perfect for your tow vehicle or fleet vehicle. Carbotech™ 1521™ is NOT recommended for ANY track use.
Very well liked by many! Very rotor friendly....some folks have gotten MULTIPLE pads on one set!

Do your best to follow the bedding in process. Its not rocket surgery but it will make a difference in overall performance.

Any tips when following EBC's bedding process here? EBC FAQ

Note that EBC's are VERY sensitive to bedding in, and should be bedded thoroughly (i.e. "stinky hot"). I now run reds up front and greens in back, had been running greens all around and may in fact put the greens on when not doing performance driving events. Great pads. Greens are a little better around town, don't fade as much as stock in performance driving, and very low dust. Reds offer more fade/heat resistance and slightly lower "bite" when cold but are equal once warmed. No experience with reds in winter, but Greens are great, better than OE.

Had run Hawk HPS's, they're no better than stock except less dust. Matter of fact. had run regular ol' Monroe Tire Ceramics (their best) and they were the equal of the Hawks HPS's.

I've used Hawk ceramics. OK pad low dust, I found no accelerated rotor wear. Not a track pad.

I'm currently using Akebono ceramics. A nice pad that does not dust much. Not a track pad.

I'm using EBC green on my Miata. Nice pad that dusts more than the ceramics, but bites better.

"Stinky hot" bedding only after "gentle driving" for a couple hundred miles per EBC's guide, no?

I have Akebono Euro pads on now and am pleased with them. My car is my daily driver....no track use, but I drive in a "spirited" manner quite a bit. Dust is next-to-nothing and they perform every bit as well as the OEM pads if not better IMO. Price is also good and they can be bought from about any auto parts store.

YES!! I forgot that part! Definitely bed them in accordance with the instructions, THEN put 'em through a few good heat cycles (classic bedding).

I know I had several hundred miles of gentle driving and a couple good (non-track) heat cycles in mine before MOTD, and on that first Dragon run they faded pretty badly - and before anyone gets their knickers in a knot about "speed", I was pulling a trailer. Once they'd been through that, no more fade the rest of the trip... when I might or might not have been pulling a trailer. ;-)
