300+ HP From MINI’s New 3 Cylinder Possible According to BMW M

So much for the GP2 being the baddest.

It’s all theoretical of course but when asked about BMW’s new 1.5L three cylinder architecture the head of BMW M was unusually candid about the possibilities. According to an interview Dr. Friedrich Nitschke gave to Car and Driver the new engine is capable of more than we initially thought. Quite a bit more.
Here’s the full quote:
The three-cylinder is an attractive engine. It is possible to reach around 185 to 200 horsepower per liter in a forced-induction three-cylinder and we have 1.5 liters of displacement. Such an engine, which, by the way, sounds very similar to a six-cylinder engine, would have over 310 horsepower. And we are not even at the limit there. Generally speaking, I could imagine such an engine.
What this means for MINI and even JCW is very unclear. We’re not even if this level of tune will ever see an official light of day. But to know its possible is interesting indeed.

I thought they were going to make the base MINIs three cyliners but the MCS(Countryman, Paceman, F56, and others), and JCW a four cylinder 2.0L? I'm confused now what they are actually planning. But even if that's the case, I still want to see the finished product on the new generations coming in this late fall/winter for 2014.

If this is the case, then I guess this sucks for the N18 club since they'll probably never see any other tuners really come out with something more. But hopefully his imagination does come true to life and it works out.

so hes saying they can get 300 HP out of a 1.5L 3 cylinder engine........?

eh.....i suppose its doable if you want the motor to only last 10K miles....

I think it could be quite reliable.

the S2000 Honda with a very reliable motor got 120 HP per liter and that is an NA and years ago. This is where we are now, only a 60% increase in power per liter in 14 years.

I think its going to amazing and quite possible. I can only imagine how unsluggish the new pacemans and countrymans will feel with the kind of power that is possible now.

heck the 2.0T in my saab can easily push 280hp/300tq and the only thing it damages is transmissions.

There's already a considerable amount of torque steer at the current output. With another 100+ hp, I can't imagine a MINI being all that streetable in its current configuration.

Not to worry - top shelve engines will stay within the BMW family.
But even a 1.5L 3-cylinder "baseline" with 150 hp would be an improvement for justa models.
Though they keep saying 4-cylinder for MCS and JCW, either 1.6L or 2.0L. We'll see.
If they bring back proper mechanical limited slip diff, it will all be good. Otherwise, burn front tires, burn ;-)

I'm still in favor of the 2.0L 4-cylinder. Why make a 3-cylinder work so hard?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, "There is no substitute for cubic inches!"

Likely for MPG reasons. MINI use to be at the top of the game with MPG, but now with all the other competitors catching up, they need to regain their MPG bragging rights.

Isn't it, "There's no replacement for displacement" ?

But forced induction lets you break those rules.

I recommend people go take a look at what the new F56 will look like on Instagram. Look for username Modded-Mini. I'm not going to lie, it looks pretty freaking cool. Especially in the magazine it says 240whp stock on a JCW!

I believe that's another artist rendering. I wish you could read all that it says. I have gone to that magazine to look and can not find that article.

I know but the final product is said to look like that(similar). I'm not going to lie the front end looks freaking awesome! I hope it's similar for the MCS and JCW. But yeah I tried finding that article and it was a pain, I ended up with the same results.
