Color me crazy, but I'd love to have the rings around the doors and the pillars around the center console yellow to matrch my car.

Anyone have experience painting stainless.... err, plastic, so that it maintains a shine and is somewhat chip resistant?

Can the paint/clearcoat etc keep the shine or do I need to wax it?

Help is appreciated, and pictures would be even better

I've tried to do the same thing on my BRG MC, but mine has turned out darker than yours (I used the Testor's Model Master paint also). Did you prime yours? If not, I wonder if mine is darker because I have the darker interior bits.

Try asking "Jackman", over on newyorkmini.org.
He has done some interior bit painting himself and it looks pretty good! :smile:

 

I just waxed my dashboard a week ago.

Should look really nice when I get them re-installed.

 

I had the interior panels and door trims painted at the body shop when they painted the aero kit. I do wax them whenever I wax the car. They're very easy to maintain and looks great!

 

Laclede, how did you manage to paint the 'Y' portion in the door. Did you break the melted joints, or did you just mask off everything?

 

I re-did several bits of my interior trim.
My MCS has alloy patina and silver trim, and the silver trim started peeling off, so I painted most of it in an anthracite color, and the speedo and vent rings in my exterior electric blue.

just one pic here (more in the thread above), you can see the EB trim around speedo, and the newly painted anthracite trim on downtubes and around shifter. Also did tach trim ring and door Y-tubes.

Mine is probably just as dark. It appears dark when not in direct sunlight, however if the sun is shining through onto them, the door is open, or in this case the flash, they appear the same as the body color. I didn't prime them, just sanded them down and sprayed them.

I broke the melted joints and then epoxy glued them back on.

Question is, do those litrtle bottles of Testors work? Do I have to take it to a body shop? Can I spray they with cans? Do they require clear coat after?

check out the NAM thread I list in my post above, has all the details on how to, with what kind of spray cans (load yourself type), clearcoat is usually NOT used on interior paint.

Oops. Sorry for the confusion. I don't know if Prestige would do the painting. What I originally meant was that I met another MINI owner (JackmanAVP) while at the the Tech Night up at Prestige last week. Jackman is the one who will be painting my downtubes, not Prestige.

DO IT!! I would love to see a yellow dash, and trim in that car. I think it would look awesome. Like the old school cars with body colored dash. I think Mini should offer body colored dashes!!! Be sure to post pics if you do!

 

I have to bring my car to a body shop to repair some parking lot damage, and I'm considering having them at least paint the down tubes. The factory finish on them is waaay too easily scratched by something as "sharp" as a CD case.

I started painting the interiors of my cars with my New Beetle back in '99 before it was common. I ALWAYS bring the parts to a local body shop. They will color match using the correct paint code form your car and they will clear coat them too. It will be MORE durable then what's in there now. And any reputable shop shouldn't charge you much at all. Just ask'em.
And you don't really have to wax them because they are not exposed to the elements.

Here is Nittany's new Indie blue downtubes. I must say they came out awesome as did the Hazard and Speedo plastic surrounds. This will tie your dash together nicely.
Will mail out in the morning. Good luck. Three coats paint/ Two coats clear.

Must say that the Indie Blue really is a pretty color, so much so I'm thinking about painting a motorcycle tank the same.
