R50/53 Rear parcel shelf prevents boot from closing fully
Rear parcel shelf prevents boot from closing fully
Hello, all!
I've tried searching the forums for info on this, but came up dry so I was hoping to find some input on this.
On my recently acquired R50, the boot sticks out about 1" past the point of being flush with the rear fender/tail light sheet metal when I close it with the rear parcel shelf in place. In other words, the hatch doesn't close all the way! I am very confused as to why this may be. I don't have pics yet, but I've noticed that when I do close the hatch with the shelf in place, the hatch bounces a bit on its way down before it actually latches-- as if the shelf were jutting out too far into its path.
Has anyone experienced this? Or does anyone have ideas? I can post pics in case it doesn't make sense.
Thanks!
Chris

Make sure the parcel shelf is pushed all the way back on its pivot point into the notch.
Sounds like its just not pushed back?

Sounds like it was removed, then reinstalled, but the hinges where it rotates were not "clicked" back in....should fit perfect, like a factory part...after all it is from the factory with the cover!!
Look around....bet it is sitting in the wrong spot, put correctly, the hinges/piviot points snaps into place and the hanging cords are hooked above it.

I have the same issue. Addressed it by adding some rubber bumpers on the outside ledges that it rests on. That raises it up enough so the 'bulge' part of the hatch doesn't hit it.
In my case I think it happened when I lifted the shelf up and out of they way (resting on the hatch strut) and stupidly attempted to close the hatch, thus mis-shaping the shelf somewhat. Tried bending it, but ended up with the bumper solution.

Also check the rubber stops, you can adjust them by hand I think that there are two of them one on each side, they could be too far out and prevent the bot from closing just twist them and try again
Thanks everyone!
I figured it could have been the rubber stops on the opening of the hatch, but they are all the way in and when the parcel shelf is removed, the hatch shuts fine. I also have checked on the placement of the shelf to make sure it's all the way clicked in, but it's fine. I guess it could be misshapen or the maybe it's the R56 shelf! I'll have to check tonight when I get home from work.

My original shelf looks straight on my 02 R53 so it was odd when the hatch would no longer close normally. It took three thick foam rubber pads (from the dollar store) on each mount to remedy the problem. Easy but odd.
