Upgrade Hi-Fi Premium Amp to Harman Kardon Amp

I have the 2009 MCS Hardtop with the HIFI Premium 10-Speaker System (Non-H/K).

I've read that my premium amplifier only has 230 watts, while the 2010-2013 H/K amplifier has 480 watts.

Can I buy the H/K amplifier online and swap it out for my non-H/K amp? I'm trying to drive some Infinity Reference (2 ohm) speakers I bought to replace the 6 front speakers (tweeters, mids, and woofers) and they are a bit power hungry, so more power with the same wiring harness would be great.

Please correct me if my information is wrong.

theSamuel, did you ever get an answer to this question? If not, did you decide on a different amp? I have the exact same set of Infinity reference speakers for my 2009 JCW with the 10 speaker HK upgrade. I have just installed the speakers and haven't done anything with the power supply. I agree they are very power hungry and I've noticed that the volume will max out pretty low when using the iPod adapter. I am shopping around for good amp options as well, so maybe we can compare notes? best, Mike

Yes! Actually, I installed a Harman amp from a 2011 Mini Cooper and it sounds very solid. I bought it for $150 on eBay. I would recommend this if you just need some extra power for your speakers. The install is straightforward, the hardest part is recoding your Mini to recognize it, but most BMW/Mini places will do this for you. The wiring harness is identical, and the new amp is a perfect fit.

Wow! thats really great! So do you have an idea about how much additional power per channel is running to the speakers? This sounds like the easiest and most straightforward solution without having to tear the entire car apart to install a set of new amps. Did you install yourself or just have a dealer do it for you? Thanks! Mike

I installed it myself, it's literally a 2 minute installation. I paid a guy I found here on NAM to code the car for me for $40 in person. There's a thread of people who can help you on NAM. I'm not sure how much extra per channel, but I can turn it up until its way too loud without distortion. But, my speakers cause rattling in the doors, which I'm trying to fix.

Gotcha. Do you have a link to the NAM thread your talking about? Re: door rattling, I fixed that by tearing the doors apart and dynamatting the hell out of them. I can help walk you through door panel removal if you need help. The inner panel is a pain in the A$$. I dynamatted the entire door skin, as well as the inner and outer door trim panels. It makes a huge difference. I suggest buying the dynamat extreme kit online. You get 10 sheets for like $130 or so.

Yeah I was afraid I was going to have to dynamat it. It's expensive! I'll look up the thread but it's one of the first things that comes up if you search NCS.

TheSamuel, just wanted to let you know I've purchased a 2011 amp like you did to power my full set of Infinity Reference speakers in my 2009 JCW. Waiting for it to arrive next week. Do you happen to have the link to the thread you were talking about for getting it programmed? I'll need to work on that next. Did you end up dynamating your doors? Let me know if you have any questions, the panels are a pain to remove but the sound difference is worth the trouble. Thanks for your help! Mike
