Question About Horns

So, I took my car in for inspection last week and failed because my horn is not working. (It did a couple of months ago when I tootled at someone who hadn't seen the light change, but I rarely use the horn so I don't know how long it's been out.)

The fuse is good and I hear a click from the fuse box which I presume is the relay. At this point I'm thinking it's the horn itself, but I see that there are two of them, one on each side.

If one goes out do they both stop working? Or is there something else I need to check out before opening him up and buying new horns?

I'd be absolutely sure the fuse is good by running a continuity test on it or replacing it. Then, I'd check the horns by removing them and applying 12v and ground to each. If they work (and I'm betting they do), I'd suspect either the relay or you've lost a ground connection.

sad to see so few can figure out the search function - or use Google . .

come on - this WAS yesterday

if you hear a click but the horns don't toot - given the fact there r 2, I'm guessing the problem is up the line and it sounds like the relay to me

you can sometime free a stuck relay by a sharp tap ......

LOL. I did most of my searching and research LAST weekend.

I think what had happened was one horn went out some time ago but I never noticed because the other worked. Then the other horn went out, which gave me the mistaken impression that BOTH went out at once.

That is why I was concerned that ONE broken horn would prevent the other from functioning. Fortunately, my Bentley manual FINALLY arrived late this afternoon and the wiring diagrams cleared that up question.

I unplugged the horn and tested at the connector and got power. So I picked up a pair of new horns and jury rigged a temporary connection to test it and got melodious tone.

So tomorrow, I'll pull the cover off and replace them.

Thanks for the info.
