R60 WTF Just Happened?
WTF Just Happened?
So there I was accelerating from a lightly curved/banked on-ramp in my All4...perfectly dry road. temp around freeze point, Sport mode on...doing about 30 mph...planted foot to floor to get up to 50 mph traffic speed.
After a few seconds of power, sudden CLUNK! CLUNK! CLUNK!
Felt like the engine stalled, then re-fired x3. The abrupt loss & re-gain of power violently shook the car...freaking me out to say the least.
After lifting my foot, everything was back to normal...was able to continue me merge onto the highway. Later when I got a chance, I again floored the pedal while going about the same original speed...could hold if a long while with no issues.
So What The F@$% happened on the on-ramp? Traction Control taking control? Why on a perfectly dry road, slight curve...no high G's involved. E-Diff-Lock? Maybe, but would expect a wheel to be pulling loose....hard to image on that dry grippy road (I have winter tires on). Clutch slipping? Should have noticed sudden high engine revs, no? And would it suddenly re-engage full power like it did 3 times?

Note that my car is manual...MT's test car is Auto,....Here's what I found at MotorTrend:
And this in Update #5:
the most troubling aspect of our year with the Countryman: its violent and maddeningly random shuddering issue. The first time it happened to me, I was rushing down the highway, about to make a lane change. I hit the gas and then suddenly bam! ba-bam! The car violently bucked and shuddered, almost like it was being momentarily slammed into park. It usually happened under hard acceleration and on an incline. And you'll never guess, when we took it to the dealer, we got the classic "couldn't replicate the problem" line. We've done some trolling around the Internet and noted that there have been a fair amount of similar complaints, although the Interwebs could suggest no concrete fixes. We asked Mini officials for comment and got no response.
As much as I liked the Mini, it did have one major hiccup. And it happened twice. The first time was in Washington heading up a steep grade. I flicked the indicator to pass a Prius in front of me and moved into the fast lane, while rolling on the throttle. Just then the Countryman started violently surging back and forth like a bronco. It scared the crap out of me. I got off the throttle to get back in the slow lane and the shaking immediately stopped. Try as I might, I couldn't reproduce the problem, though it did occur once more. Again on a hill, but this time the Mini hiccupped at city speeds. It was nowhere near as violent, and lasted about a second before the Mini resumed accelerating.

Thanks...just found a thread on it. Will be reporting to local dealer shortly.
I was just in there last weekend getting snows put on and the engine temp sensor updated.
You'd think they'd perform this SIM update as a standard service...it's lame to wait for the customer to report it first. Could have caused an accident.

What year is your car? I see you're in Vancouver. I am too. Dealer's don't usually perform Technical Service Bulletins automatically (unlike recalls). You have to tell them that it's a problem first. I got it updated on my car as soon I have encountered the problem (I think in the first year of ownership).
I just got my CMS a month ago and I am curious if it is up to date with all the fixes. Is there anyway (an Internet site) that lists things like the SIM update and the the temp sensor updates that were mentioned here and a way to tell if I am current?
Thanks

I had this happen several times early on with my '11 ALL4 - the dealer eventually installed the '12 programming and it hasn't happened since. The other threads cover the details like your and the TSB that seems to have made it go away for us. Scary as Hell when it happens - accelerating on a curving ramp for me, like for you...

I still wonder what is actually occurring. Is it a traction control glitch, throttle programming, EDL??
Obviously a case of the plumbing being way complex on these modern cars

You can tell my Crystal Silver All4 when you see it around...it's the one with the Canadian Tire black vinyl tread plate stuck on the rear bumper top surface!
i have an 03/2012 built cms all4, manual
at ~30 mph in second gear with the winter tires on, dry pavement, if i floor the gas, at about 40-45 mph, the tires will break loose, the DSC intervenes ... feels like i lifted the throttle a little then floored it again
it is not violent, in fact it is quite gentle and does not upset the car
the DSC light comes on then goes off when full power returns
it does not happen in TRACTION mode or with both DSC/TRACTION OFF

When the turbo overboost, it cuts fuel so you can't damage the turbo, hints the bucking.
You achieve full boost around 1400-1600 which is amazing for a twin scroll turbo. Like everybody else said, there's an update and you should be good to go!
Motor on my friend, motor on!
