Has anyone done the update yet. I've never done an update before. All you need is a thumb drive right?

Correct.

1. Format the drive as FAT
2. Copy the BIN file to the root.
3. Plug the thumb drive into the port below the hand brake (not power usb in the glove box).
4. start the ignition (won't update unless the engine is running)
5. MINI Connected settings - Software update
6. Update. takes about 4 minutes.
7. Changes won't take effect until bluetooth is recycle/car restarted.

Pretty straight forward, you can also roll back the firmware revision, it's listed in the settings menu.

I just did the update using a 16GB thumb drive. Previously I have only been able to get my iPhone 5 to sporadically connect with MINI Connected. It connected fine after the update, but I'll have to wait and see how much it has improved.

I don't know what this update really does, but it didn't help my iPhone 5 connectivity. It connected on the first try, but after a few minutes it disconnected. By disconnected I mean MINI Connected did not see the phone, and although it was shown as an external device it wouldn't play music. This is the same sort of behavior I saw before the update.

The update information references "improved compatibility" with iPhone (IOS 5). Of course iPhone has been up to IOS 6 for months. Maybe there will be improved compatibility for that in another year or so.

Successfully updated. Was going to do it in the garage last night but the engine needed to be on, so I waited until it was back outside today. Took a total of 5 minutes. Remember to use the USB port that the iPhone/iPod connects to in the center console.

Also it might be a good idea to take note of the software version right before updating, and recheck the version after updating to ensure the update actually occurred.

What port do we use in a 2013 Hardtop? There is the USB port in the center console in front of the cup holders but that is all I see? Is there another one hidden?

Is anyone else using mac to download update. When I download file it is a zip file. When I open zip file it reveals a Folder: UPD01005. When I open folder it has 5 items in it. One file is a .xml and other 4 are .bin files. Which one/all should I transfer to the thumb drive root? I have tried various file combos and the zip drive is not recognized my the mini connect software update. Either my thumbdrive (which is formated in FAT) is bad or the mac operating OS is the problem. Anyone out there used a mac successfully.

I downloaded to a Mac. Once you unzip the zip file, you will have a .bin file. That is what gets copied to the flash drive for installation.

A bit more. I believe that a .bin file can be further unpacked, but you don't want to do it. Once the file was downloaded, rather than unzip using the finder (which unpacks to far), open a terminal window, cd to where the .zip file is, and then type the command

unzip {file name}

where {file name} is the .zip file. You should then have a single .bin file.

esbeale, Thanks for the reply. Your info worked perfectly. I have been hacking Panny gh1 & gh2's for several years and the methodology is similar except I used Sandisk memory cards instead of thumb drives. Opening in terminal was the answer. Interestingly when unzipping from the finder a single .bin file flashes very briefly disappears and you end up with the wrong files. I talked to two different dealerships and neither one were any help. I'm not sure they were even aware of any updates for MINI Connectivity. Only mac people will have issues. Thanks again for your help. Greatly appreciated.

The free StuffIt expander will expand the zip without decompressing the bin file as well on the mac.

There is actually a UPD01006 available if you go to www.bmw.com/update and enter the last 7 characters of your VIN.

Full details here

From what I have read the Connectivity Hardware/Software for both the MINI & BMW seems to be the same.

Release notes said something about better support for iPhone 5 and IOS 6. Only thing I've actually noticed is a progress bar when playing audio from Bluetooth.

Question on updating: I have tried twice following the instructions from the first page to update my software and get File Invaild.

What am i doing wrong?

I got the file direct from MINI's page and formated FAT and extracted the zip to the root of the flash drive.

Any help will be most welcome.
