Just purchased 2010 Mini Cooper

I'm new to the forum - Greetings Everyone!

I just purchased a 2010 Mini Cooper from a Chrysler dealer - While I love the car, I'm baffled on a few things that the dealer couldn't answer.

While I was reading the owner's manual last night, I saw that the car came with a cargo cover. Mine is missing. I see one on ebay that says it will fit a 07-11 Mini - Is this correct? I just want to make sure I am ordering the correct item.

And yesterday, when I start the car, the low beam warning indicator lights above the steering wheel and remains for about 30 seconds. But the lights work, both is low and high. I don't understand what it's trying to tell me.

And my car only came with one key. I called MINI and they told me to come down there to order the key in person, then come back a few weeks later to get it and have it programmed. I see online where people selling the remote disks (not sure what these are really called) and program them themselves.
Unfortunately, the MINI dealership is hours away so I can't run there very easily.

Any help at all for this newbie MINI owner is appreciated. I feel like I need a class to learn it all. This is a huge change from my Dodge Durango!

Thanks in advance!

Welcome!

07-11 is the year range of 2nd generation MINIs so yes it should fit, I'm not 100% sure but I don't believe they changed anything in the back for the 3rd gen either so they would probably fit as well

No sure as far as the headlights go. Also your MINI should still be under the 6yr/100,000 maintenance plan. Ask about this if no one at the dealer said anything. And if it's a manual, last time I was at my dealer they told me if you're within that 6yr/100k you get 1 free clutch replacement.

Enjoy your MINI and welcome to the community!

Thank you! The warranty for this car was 4yr/50,000 - It just turned 46,000 last night. My nearest MINI dealer is a few hours away and the local BMW dealer won't do anything warranty related.

It's an automatic, although I can't figure out if it's a 5 speed or 6-speed. I called MINI to see if I could get the original window sticker from the car and they told me no, since it had proprietary information on it. I would love to know my original cost and options!

There is a thread here that you will have to search for that you can give your vin to and they will look up your build sheet, not the window sticker, but a list of all options.

All Autos are 6 speeds.

The key needs to be ordered is a license (ID) and a copy of registration to prove it's you. Then it will take a couple of days to come form NJ and the dealer will have to program it (should be around $300 in total).

Light bulb warning, are you sure its a headlight? The car monitors all forward and rear facing lights: headlights, fog lights, city lights (above the fog, little eye lid), brakes, side markers, turn signals, and tag lights.

Cargo cover, don't spend too lunch or get it if you need it, I always seem to take mine out to get stuff int he car and never put it back in as I take it out once every week ro two for various reasons.

Welcome and good luck searching and reading all about these fun little machines.

You have no choice here. You can not program it yourself.

Yetti96 - The indicator light is yellow, facing to the left with lines going from top right to bottom left, and an exclamation point in the center. And thank you for the build sheet info

Braminator - Thank you! Looks like I'm taking a road trip to Charleston

Maybe someone with a manual will come on here and tell you. Did you check your fog lights?

The manual said it's the lowbeams. But they work. The fog lights work too. I'm baffled.

Each fog lamp housing consists of 2 lights, an upper vanity light, and the fog lights themselves, which actually make up the lower half.

The photo below shows only the vanity lights on (which turn on automatically with the low beams). If the fog lights are on and work, the entire bottom "circle" should light up.

Hope that makes sense.

This is going to sound like a stupid question, but how do I turn on the fog lights?

The switch is on the center console, 2nd switch from the left (next to the window up/down switch).

This space is ... empty. So I guess we've narrowed down that my car didn't come with fog lights.

LOL! Thanks!

There needs to be a Mini for Dummies book. I don't know anyone who has one. There aren't any clubs near me so I'm flying solo trying to figure it all out.

Did the dealer at least have enough knowledge to show you the hidden storage compartment?

Hmm, I guess not! In the owners' manual that warning light refers to "Low beam headlamp or fog lamp failed". If your low beams are OK, then you might need to take it in to have the warning light diagnosed. Or, maybe try calling MINI directly to see if they can help you @ 866-ASK-MINI

Also, even though you bought your MINI used you might still be able to register it at the MINI Owners' Lounge at https://ol.miniusa.com/ using your VIN. There's another nice resource to have (you already have the owners' manual I see)

Good luck, and congratulations

If you're referring to the one in the dashboard, I found that when I accidentally leaned on it. Chrysler showed me nothing. Is there another?

Thank you. I have 4k miles left on the warranty. I scheduled an appt to take it in. Hopefully I will find something before the warranty expires.

Do most people purchase an extended warranty?

Nope. That's the one. We've had forum members who have had their MINI for years, and didn't know it was there.

Today I got a the exterior light is out indicator light in addition to the low beam indicator. Before I drove off, I checked everything. All were on. I drove to the store and put some things in the hatch, restarted the car and that indicator light was gone but the low beam was still there.

Two-fold question - does the exterior light out indicator come on after so many low beam indicator warnings? Could something have been loose when I closed the hatch and that's why the exterior light indicator went off?

I'm not getting a warm fuzzy from my Mini right about now. I'm regretting buying used. This is EXACTLY why I traded in my SUV.

The Chrysler dealer I bought the car from called this morning and asked how I liked the car. I told them the issue. They told me they could clear the codes out - so I will go there are 4:30 - they said if they come back then there is a problem. Again, not getting a warm fuzzy here. I want to be sure the lights work. I wish MINI wasn't 3 hours from here!

Suggestions?
