What are the differences. Is there a way to tell them apart.

They are the EXACT SAME HEAD! There is no differances between them, even the cam is the exact same.

The JCW head was barely cleaned up by the factory... Ported just enough to get rid of the casting marks on the intake side and a VERRY mild port done to the exhaust side. NO change in the valve size, or angle either. Pretty dissappointing, I know.

The valves are different on the S head because of hotter temps generated

Pulling info from the MINI Bentley Manual, it indicates the valves are made in a Cooper S head are made from an improved material. This thread indicates the exhaust valves contain Inconel: http://www.mini2.com/forum/first-gen...nder-head.html. All heads have a three-angle valve job from the factory. Valves in both non-S and S heads are the same size. I don't know personally, but several threads on NAM quote the JCW head as having a 4mm increase in the exhaust port size; unsure on any additional port work.
