MY Mini gave me HELL 2day! Dealer wants to charge me 80$ to register new battery!
My new to me 2009 mini cooper crapped out on me today! So out of no where my battery gave out and then rolled my passenger window down and wouldn't roll back up and all the buttons started acting crazy. Took the battery out which was oem from 2011 so I go to the dealer since they have a 2 year warranty WHICH i HOPED THEY WOULD HONOR. Nope I just bought the car used and I don't have the original receipt! So I had to buy another battery for 180$ installed and now they want me to come back in for them to register the new battery which cost 80$. After installing the new battery I notice the car idling weird?! After new tires and this I will have put 1k within a week into my new mini So my question is does the mini really need to have the new battery registered since the dealer insist. !

Yeah pretty nuts I have researched some and found this from a previous post here.
THERE IS a procedure that is supposed to be done on the computer system when a battery is replaced and it DOES affect the way the car sees the battery. No it does not take 1.5 hours only about 5 minutes.
So for those who think this is BS well it is not totally
Here is the wording straight out of the Wiring Diagram Service from BMW/MINI
Registering the battery replacement
Why register the battery replacement?
After fitting a new battery, the service function 'Register battery replacement' should be run. Registration of the battery replacement is necessary to notify the power management (software in the engine electronics and intelligent battery sensor) that a new battery has been fitted in the vehicle.
Without registration of the battery replacement, the power management does not run properly and this can lead to function limitations, for example reduction or deactivation of individual consumer units.
Register battery replacement
This function informs the power management in the DME/DDE of a battery replacement. The following operations are performed:
As the battery depends on the engine ands options fitted, the following information is coded in the CAS:
On installation of a battery with higher or lower capacity or installation of an AGM battery, Progman must be used to recode the CAS:

Battery: battery capacity and battery type
The battery capacity can be read from the label with the technical data. The other label contains safety instructions.
AGM batteries can be recognised by the black battery housing. The cycle-proof AGM batteries are used for especially heavy loads on the vehicle network depending on equipment and requirements.

This function informs the power management in the DME/DDE of a battery replacement. The following operations are performed:
- The current kilometre reading is stored for the battery replacement.
- The stored measured values (battery charge statuses, current, voltage, temperature, etc.) are deleted.
- The power management is initialised.
As the battery depends on the engine ands options fitted, the following information is coded in the CAS:
- Battery capacity (for example 90 Ah)
- Battery type: AGM battery or lead-acid battery.
On installation of a battery with higher or lower capacity or installation of an AGM battery, Progman must be used to recode the CAS:
- With Progman, run the retrofit ”Battery” (select battery capacity of the fitted battery).
- Register additional battery replacements with this service function.

I am nervous this is already the second battery being replaced giving a total of 3 batteries in a 2009! I wanted to go aftermarket such as the Duralast from Autozone which comes with a 3 year warranty but MINI service told me they have seen many problems with non oem batteries. They aren't very nice nor helpful but insist on me spending money there go figure. TOM BUSH MINI OF JACKSONVILLE
Did the dealer install the battery? If so, why didn't they 'register' it then?
The batteries are lasting about two years. That seems a little short, so make sure to keep your receipt for this one, so that you can return it if it goes bad. Though, depending on condition, it might not be the car at all. If the car sat unused for a time before you bought it, that could have drained it. We just returned a good Sears battery because it has been in a car that we didn't drive for over a year, and it wouldn't hold a charge. (they replaced it, no problem) So, since the car is new to you, you don't know what happened to it before. And if you bought it with tires that needed replacing, well, that's part of buying a used car. Those might be the oem tires. What is the mileage?
You're going to want to change the oil... seriously, you are.. unless you KNOW that it was changed recently. And keep an eye on the oil level, don't let it get low! Very important in MINIs.
MINIs are not like regular little Japanese cars, they take a bit more maintenance and they are... 'quirky'. They have needs. But you have almost seventy posts, so you must have read a fair bit on the forum about that?
Good luck!

I bought a battery from Napa for $108 made specifically for Mini complete with the vent tube and all. I changed it myself and didn't register it or anything and I'm going on 2 years already no problems.
Bought a replacement battery from O'Reily exactly like the OEM except black for our 07 MINI Cabrio in June. Replaced it in their parking lot and used their electronic memory retainer in the charger while doing it. Haven't had any problems.

I threw in a $160 Autozone Duralast in July without any issues with my 2008 MCS. Parking lot swap. Mentioned the swap to my SA while there for something else and no offer or demand was made for programming.
The battery died in my girls 09 MCS just days after we brought it home.
I simply picked up a new compatable Mini battery from O'Reily and tossed it in.
I've had no problems what so ever. I never even thought it would be an issue.
I guess I got lucky?

Im here now getting the battery registered. Another thing I noticed on the radio some of the letters were pixelated and broken but after the new battery the lines are straight and complete without pixels missing. Hmmmmmm
