Rear Bumper faux ventilation

Hi All,

As a new owner of a 2012 Coupe' JCW I noticed on the rear bumper where the reverse light is, that it is a visual ventilation grill but is it totally solid on both sides (left and right). Was wondering if there are accessories that actually are ventilated. In anticipation of a CIA I removed the front hood scoop blocker. I just hate it when they make things look like something rather than make it functional.

Anyway anyone know of a aftermarket or of a Mini part that will actually create a vent there?

thanks..

It's faux because there is nothing to actually vent back there. It would serve no functional purpose. There are some aftermarket rear diffusers (and the upcoming GP will have rear diffuser), but that's for underbody air flow and rather different from opening vents.

Regarding the hood scoop, you do realize that your MINI already has a CAI, and that it doesn't need to use the hood scoop, right?

What exactly are you planning on venting? Personally, I was planning on a rear seat delete with the addition of an electric hibachi for tailgating parties. In that case, I could use a little rear bumper ventilation.

actually it does not ... it has an air box. When I put in the Alta CAI on my 2007 the HP increase was very measurable, as well as deleting the Turbo Muffler.

On my 2007 I did delete the rear seats ... but it was really a pain and all I got was rattles and buzzing ... I ended up putting them back.

Cheers!

Are you sure those things you are looking at in the back aren't actually plugs, in what look like a grill, for the optional "rear fog lamps"? I don't have rear fog lamps, so there are these two sort of oval grill like, but non-functioning plastic pieces that can be popped out if I choose to add rear fog lamps aftermarket. I also understand that there already is an electrical harness for the rear fog lamps tucked inside should I choose to add them after market (nice touch on MINI's part).

Ya on the 2012 the bulbs are actually installed .. from what the dealer says .. they can not activate them due to US DOT regs which I dont understand as I had rear fog lights on my 2007. but yes on the JWC areo package there are big black squares the only functional thing there is one backup sensor,-- After speaking with the dealer and back office .. for tracking purpose on the GP there will be grills avail. It will relieve some back pressure from the air coming off of the tires ... not sure what the gain is.

However just found out that one of the plastic covers on the rear shock came off so they are replacing ... so many un-needed parts ...

Uh, actually the MINI does have a cold air intake, air box or not. I don't know what your level of understanding is, but the MINI pulls in air (cold) directly from the front of the car. Just because you get rid of the air box does not mean you have created a CAI, far from it actually. An Alta CAI is actually a hot air intake as it uses an open filter pulling in air directly from the hotter engine compartment. You got measurable hp increase? Seriously? How did you measure it? Did you compare against the JCW intake kit? That has been shown to be just about the best out there and it mimics the standard MCS intake, air box and all.

Ok to let you know I come from a very scientific background and I did do the testing. there are two limiting factors with an air intake the size of the box (or restriction) and air temperature. The air intake does come from the front of the Mini but the air box is the limiting factor and the hose that delivers the air does the added benefit of heating it up for you. Place a remote thermometer in the air intake and watch the readings. Take it on the fwy and you will see that it is very hot. Now take out the air box put in a CAI (NM or Alta does not matter) and remove the plastic scoop blocker and perform the same test -- put the remote sensor right infront of the air intake in fact you can attach it to the foam or the filter materal. after about 5 minutes at speed you will find that the air is just slightly above ambient temperature.

Now that is not to say that not traveling at speed you will get heat soak but that is true of the existing air box. and by the way you can leave in the existing hose that directs air back to the CAI but I would recommend that you change out the hose to a silicon or high temp hose that prevents the air from being heated up (as much) as the factory hard plastic hose.

Now how did I quantify the HP I had it Dyno'd both before and after. Realizing that the HP rating from the manufacture is on a bench and not at the wheels. on my 2007 stock mini at the wheels was 160 HP corrected to a Bench puts it somewhere in the 180's and that was with a K & N filter with the stock air box.

I then removed the Turbo Muffler, and replaced the Air intake and Hose to a Alta CAI and removed the plastic air blocker. put it back on the Dyno and it came back at 180 HP at the wheels converting it back to bench numbers which is about 13% puts it around 204 HP.

What I experienced was quicker response and faster track times. All I can tell you this is what I did and what I experienced.

Edit -- to answer your question the JWC is just a bigger air box so it does not get restricted under high acceleration.

Cheers !

OK, so just so I understand you correctly, you come from a very scientific background, not just one that is ordinarily scientific, got it! No offense, but this ^^^ is coming from the guy who originally posted questions wondering if the little fake "visual ventilation grills" actually, well ventilated? OK, you win. You somehow magically increased your hp by 24 hp with a CAI. I guess now that its posted on the internets, it must be true. Peace out!

If you want to hang on words and try make a point .. then fine .. you have me .. guilty .. Very should not have used VERY (there I said it again)...but what ever. As to Dark Magic in getting HP all I can tell you is my experience and what the Dyno showed it as. Come on out to Phoenix and we can run on the track. As to the ventilation grills .. I did not like the look of the plastic .. and wanted to know if there was an after market replacement. And oh by the way the GP has the grills and it does become effective after 102 MPH (not my numbers its Mini's, yes Mini's the Service Manager here at my dealer was intrigued and called Mini and that was there answer and there will be a retro kit for JCW's in a few months.

I thought this board was to ask for opinions and assistance but I guess some like to degrade what they dont understand ...

Im out ...

Look at M7 tuning website and they might have what you're looking for.
