2009 Clubman Sunroof Problem - It takes 7 steps for full deployment

Hello! I just had my 2009 Clubman S at the dealer here in Denver yesterday after some strange electrical issues. The instrument panel and the navigation system were going on an off while the AC/heater blower went on and off. About a day before that, my sunroof started to not open all the way and sounded like it was trying to open as I drove down the road. Monday I got a message the the auto-trap function had be activated with a warning triangle in the tachometer.

The dealer told me that I need a new motor? The sunroof does open but it stops every few inches. Then I pull the toggle switch back and the sunroof moves another few inches. It takes 1 step to tilt the sunroof and 7 more to fully open it fully.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Parker

Out of warranty?

If so, I'd keep the damned thing closed (meaning that's what I'd do, not what you should, necessarily).

In warranty, get it fixed.

As for the behavior, my first thought is software issues. But if the dealer says motor, my second thought is a stripped pinion gear.

Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable than I (wouldn't take much) will come along.

I had problems with the sunroof on my '08 and called the dealer and they told me to bring it in. They siad it needed a new motor and gave me a loaner for a few days while they repaired everything under warranty. My '08 is still under warranty so your '09 should be fixed for free too.

Sorry - I forgot about the mileage - mine only has around 33,000 miles on it.

See if they will give you a loaner because on mine they wanted to have it for a few days. They said they wanted to let it sit out in the sun for a few hours and get nice and hot so they could try it while it was hot.

That's an inexpensive repair. I'd let them do it.
