USB/I-POD retrofit P/N: 65 41 0422533

Has anyone done or had this retrofit done for him?

I am interested in how it actually works, as it is different than the factory-fit USB audio option: the USB there resides on the bluetooth module and information is carried over the MOST fibers. This one however connects to the stereos AUX lines but also retains a connection to the CAN bus.

I would guess the decoding of the files etc is done by the retrofitted adapter and carried over to the speakers in analog form and the CAN connection is used to display music information and control the module. I am correct?

I believe that the adapter does the task of iPod control (e.g. song selection), but actually performs no decoding -- it uses the analog line-out from the iPod's dock connector. It connects to the same interface on the stereo that would be used for a CD changer.

Some information here:
http://www.motoringfile.com/2007/06/...-install-pdfs/ (part number different from yours, but there have probably been updates to handle newer model iPod/iPhones)
http://www.motoringfile.com/2007/07/...-ipod-adapter/

Check out this thread: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...f-install.html. The retrofit is easy if the car is already prewired for a CD changer, but the car needs to be programmed, which often doesn't go smoothly.

Thanks for the info, but the pure ipod adapter is diffeent from the USB/iPod adapter I am talking about: the pure iPod connects to the MOST fiber optic system and requires coding, this one does not!

The retrofit instructions refer to the two radio options, but my car actually has the CCC Nav, so I am wondering about compatibility...

My bad. Very interesting. I knew about a USB/Bluetooth retrofit, but didn't know that there was a different USB kit like this.

It is just for the basic WAVE CD player not available in the US (we get the higher-end BOOST). And it looks like it is using dedicated pins for what I would assume would normally have been used for a CD changer. To answer your question in the original post, you can see in the install instructions the harness connects to the AUX in of the head unit. So that module the kit includes just passes the line out from the ipod, or decodes the USB file to provide an analog signal to the head unit. And also since it does mention the CAN bus, that is presumably how it controls and displays the information.

Since this is only for the WAVE radio, I really doubt it would work with the CCC. And I am sure the programming to work with this unit is not included.

Very interesting retrofit, I haven't seen this before.

Okay well, try this:

8. Concluding work and initialisation
This retrofit system does not require coding.
- Connect the battery
- Conduct a brief test
- Initialise the iPod as follows
1. Disconnect the iPod if it is connected
2. Switch on the ignition
3. Switch on the radio
4. Change to AUX mode
5. Press and hold station button 2 until MINI appears on the radio display
6. Switch off the ignition
- Conduct a function test
- Re-assemble the car

See if MINI appears on your radio display! Can't believe they put in a secret key to self-program a retrofit.

Yes... Indeed this seems rather strange. The reason I am interested in this particular retrofit, is that it is the only retrofit that adds USB connection.

There is another retrofit that only adds iPod support, connects to the MOST bus and requires coding, but no USB.

As far as I can tell from the WDS, the connectors used are the same when it comes to CCC/Boost/Wave. So electrically connecting this adapter shold be possible, now about detecting it however, I am not very sure.

There is also a Bluetooth/USB retrofit, but it's too expensive unless you desperately wanted Bluetooth as well:

Yes, but I already have an oem-like aftermarket bluetooth module (FISCON) installed...
Thanks for the advice anyway, I may be looking at Dension after all.
